Abstract
The coleus botanically known as Plectranthus barbatus belongs to the family ‘Lamiaceae’ and grows wild in arid and semi-arid regions of India. It is used in many ayurvedic preparations. It shot into prominence in modern medicine with the isolation of diterpenoid and forskollin from its tubers. A field experiment was conducted for “Standardization of irrigation and nutrient schedule for drip fertigation in coleus (Plectranthus barbatus Briq.)” at College of Horticulture, UHS Campus, GKVK (PO), Bengaluru. The experiment was laid out in Factorial Randomized Block Design (FRBD) with nine treatment and three replications. Treatments comprising of combination of drip irrigation regimes and fertigation schedules, Viz., 0.9 IW/CPE (I1), 0.7 IW/CPE (I2) and 0.5 IW/CPE (I3) ratio, fertigation up to 4 months (F1), fertigation up to 5 months (F2) and soil application of recommended dosage of fertilizers (F3) were imposed. The rooted cuttings of “Aisiri” were used for planting. Among drip irrigation regimes, irrigation at 0.7 IW/CPE recorded maximum plant height, number of branches, leaf area, tubers per plant (25.0), tuber diameter (3.9 cm), tuber length (21.8 cm), dry tuber yield (4.45 t ha-1), maximum nutrient uptake by the plant, nutrient balance, nutrient use efficiency, agronomic use efficiency and it was on par with irrigation at 0.9 IW/CPE ratio. The total forskolin content was maximum with 0.5 IW/CPE ratio (0.86 %). The maximum plant height, number of branches, leaf area, number of tubers per plant (25.5), maximum tuber diameter (3.9 cm), maximum tuber length (21.3 cm), highest dry tuber yield (4.42 t ha-1), nutrient uptake by the plant, nutrient balance, nutrient use efficiency and agronomic use efficiency was recorded with fertigation twice a week up to 5 months. The maximum BC ratio (1.68) was observed with 0.7 IW/CPE irrigation regime and fertigation up to 5 months.
