Abstract
The globalization in India has changed the activities in the country’s clothing industry. The fashion industry though only recently established, is one of the highest growth sectors in India. Its multicrore turnover promises numerous employment openings as well as career prospects that are unlimited. The industry is facing an unprecedented need for professionally qualified and trained manpower. Fashion designing is the latest trend of the day. A number of Institutes are teaching this course and are preparing their students to join in the garment industry. With the onset of computers, instructional technology in the form of development of Computer aided material production (CAMP) and learning assessment of instructional packages is the need of the hour and the emphasis lies in the development and use of suitable programme based on computerized technology. This prompted the need for developing instructional CD on fashion designing. Hence, present study on “Application of computer software for developing instructional CD on fashion designing” was undertaken with the objectives to explore the present status /availability of CDs and software applicable in the field of fashion designing to serve as base for designing Instructional CD on fashion. The genesis of interactive multimedia CD was to cater to the growing needs of India’s evolving fashion industry. The primary purpose of developing the Instructional CD was to broaden the base of understanding of ideas and concepts related to fashion and dress designing, along with culmination of creative skills among its users. The developed CD was tested for its effectiveness in terms of ease in transmission, gain in knowledge and acquisition of skills using pre and post research experimental design aspect. An exploratory research design of survey method was used to collect desired information from selected 18 fashion institutes through questionnaire. The major findings showed that all the responding fashion institutes were offering either diploma and degree courses or short term modular courses on fashion designing. Majority (56%) were offering one year diploma in fashion designing followed by two year advance diploma in fashion designing ( 39%).The number of seats in each course varied from 20-50. 77.77% fashion institutes were using Corel Draw, followed by Photoshop (50%). TukaCad and Adobe Illustrator were used by 44% responding institutes respectively. Outcomes on use of instructional CD revealed that all the selected fashion institutes (100%) did not use any instructional CD developed by self or others. The instructional CD was developed using three softwares-Corel Draw, TukaCad and Adobe Photoshop in three different modules. The mean weighted score of efficacy of the developed CD as evaluated by judges ranged between 4.6 to 5.00 out of maximum rating of five which implies that developed instructional CD was evaluated as excellent. The developed CD after being evaluated by the judges was also field tested for judging its effectiveness in terms of gain in knowledge and acquisition of skills on all the sample subjects of control and experimental group. The traditional method of teaching was followed for control group whereas developed instructional CD was implemented on experimental group. The knowledge test was taken before and after the training of both the groups. The result of the analysis showed higher mean gain in knowledge in the experimental group (70.87) as compared to control group (59.23). Similarly, mean percent score of control (118.86) and experimental group (164.00) for acquisition of skills in creative designing also clearly depicts significant difference , as Mean score was found to be greater in experimental group ,(t-value = 22.99) .which shows usefulness of the CD to the user. It was interesting to note here that in experimental group, percent gain was more than 80% for gain in knowledge and above 38% for acquisition of skills in comparison to control group, which emphasize the effectiveness of the developed CD in the light of the defined objectives.
