Abstract
Social, emotional maturity and social acceptance of adolescent boys and girls between the age group (14-18 years) were studied. 240 boys and 240 girls in the age group of 14-18 years randomly drawn from 6 co-educational and 6 non-co-educational Hindi medium schools of Udaipur city. Social maturity scale, emotional maturity scales were used to assess the social, emotional maturity of adolescents. Sociometry was conducted in the respective classes of adolescents to assess their social acceptance level. For data collection selected subjects were approached by the investigator in their respective schools. Eight case – studies were conducted on selected adolescents for in depth study. The data obtained were analyzed in the light of objectives set for the present investigation. The social and emotional maturity of adolescent boys and girls were assessed by percentage distribution. Age wise percentage distribution was done to assess overall and component wise social and emotional maturity of adolescent boys and girls of 14-18 years. 't' test was applied to find out significant differences between boys and girls of 14-18 years of age, from joint and nuclear families and from co-educational and non-co-educational schools. Percentage distribution was done for level of social maturity and social acceptance of boys and girls separately. Chi-square test was applied for the association between social maturity and social acceptance. On the basis of case studies, guidelines were prepared for parents and teachers to enhance social, emotional maturity of adolescent boys and girls. Major findings of the study were as follows: 1. Overall social maturity of girls was slightly higher than boys and overall emotional maturity of boys was higher than girls, 2. Boys from joint families and co-educational schools were having high social and emotional maturity 3. Girls from nuclear families and co-educational schools were having high social and emotional maturity, 4. Higher percentage of boys and girls from co-educational schools were having high social maturity and high social acceptance and significant association between social maturity and social acceptance was observed in boys and girls from co-educational schools, 5) Case studies revealed that stimulating environment, mutual trust, good role-model, open communication system, good parental support are necessary for adolescents social maturity and acceptance.
