    The Barrington Asiatica is a medium-size tree commonly found in Car Nicobar island known forits ichthyotoxic property. [t grows on sandy and rocky short areas and has lantern shaped seeds, locally called r(m)av used during the calm season in shallow and low tide \ryaters for killing fishes, octopus, etc- At every successful operation they harvest about I-J kg and on the whole about lO 20 k8 offishes per lrip. This method of fish catching was popular among the Car Nicobari tribes until the massive tsunami of 26th December,2004, which caused dislocation of tribes from their erstwhile coastal inhabitations to interior arcas, damage ofcoral reefs, permanent water intrusion in the intertidal area, and deslruction of,(,/,.),av trees- Hence, now_a_days the popularity of this nshing melhod among them has diminished. The sludy not only reveals lhe usefulness of seeds in the harvesting of fishes but also ihe utilization ofolher parts oftree such as leaves for therapeutic purpose in fracture, wound, de-worming, pain re)ieving of human beings; log for construction ofcaooe' wooden houses, sitting stage, handicraft items, lire wood and whole tree for preventing lhe coastal erosion.

    EFFECTS OF DIFFERENT PIGMENT SOURCES ON COLOUR CHANGES JUVENILE CARASSIUS AND GROWTH OF AURATUS

    The investigation was aimed at determining the effects of different pigment sources on colour development and growth juvenile goldfish. Four pigment sources were tried: Shrimp head meal , dried drum stick leaves dried curry leaves and turmeric powder. these pigments were added to basal diet at 10 ,5,5 and 5% respectively and fed into the goldfish for five weeks. fish feed with curry leaves, drumstick leaves, turmeric powder, and shrimp head meal showed better color development than the fish feed with basal diet. Growth was stimulated by shrimp head meal and inhibited by turmeric powder.

    INFLUENCE OF CERTAIN HERBAL ADDITIVES ON THE GROWTH SURVIVAL AND DISEASE RESISTANCE OF GOLDFISH, CARASSTUS AURATAS (LINNAEUS)

    The ornamental fish trade earns foreign exchange, besides serving as a source of employment. Appllication of medicinal herbs in aquaculture is gaining success. Recently use of medicinal plant is considered as an alternative to antibiotics in fish health management The present investigation was designed to study the influence of two herbal additives viz., Phyllanthus niruri and Aloe vera on the growth and disease resistance in goldfish, Carassius auratus. The experiment was conducted with the adult fishes for a period of 60 days. After the 60 days of the experiment, fish of each treatment were challenged by pathogenic Aeromonas hydrophila which was given by intraperitoneal injection and kept under observation for 10 days to record clinical signs and the daily mortality rates. Phyllanthus, at 1.5 percent concentration yielded highest mean weight gain ( 1.769 g) followed by aloe which recorded a mean weight gain of 1.389 g at 1.0 percent concentration. The highest survival rate (80 Vo) was observed in aloe fed group at 1.5 per cent concentration followed by Phyllanthus (70Vo) at 1.5 per cent concentration. These results indicate that the addition of herbal additives can promote growth and can prevent disease in goldfish farming.

    EFFECT OF FORMULATED DIETS ON THE GROWTH AND SURVIVAL OF GOLDFISH (SARASSIUS AURATUS) FRY

    Deb with 20, 30, ard 4070 protein level were formulated and prepared. Fifteen day old fry were stocked in da$ic troughs at densities of 10 and 20 fry/L. The feed with 40% crude protein showed better performance under the stocking density of 10 fry/L followed by 30 and 20 % protein diets. Fry reared at the higher stocking density(20/L) showed relatively better fish biomass production, btrt individual size increment was better with fry stocked at 10/L, on termination of the 30-day experiment.

    Effect of cobalt chtoride and vitamin Bu on the growth and gonadal maturation of goldfrsh Carassius auratus

    The investigation was aimed at determining the effect of vitamin BD and cobalt chloride on the growth and maturation of goldfish. The fishes were stocked in rectangular cem*ent tanks and fed with artificial feed incorporated with vitamin B12 and cobalt chloride at three d.ifferent concentrations. cobalt chloride incorporated at Z.b ppm gave positive results both for gonadal development and growth' Among the doses-test"d fo. vitamin Br, the 25 ppm concentration had shown highest response for both maturation and growth.

    Effect of livefood organisms on the growth and gonadal maturation of goldfish (Carassius auratus)

    The investigation was aimed at determining the effect of livefood organisms on the growth and maturation of goldfish.Artemia.fed,fishes recorded highest mean weight gain. The individual mean weight gain of a fish per day was recorded to be 0.0439 for adult goldfish fed with Artemia,0.0259 for the earthworm fed fishes and 0.023g in control. Growth rate was almost double in Artemia. fed frshes than control. The highest GSI values for both sexes were also recorded in Artemia fed fishes followed by those fed with earthworm.

    Effect of antibiotics on the gfowth and maturation in goldfrsh (Carassius auratus)

    The investigation was aimed at determining the effect of antibiotics on the growth and maturation of goldfish. The fishes were stocked in rectangular cement tanks and fed with artificial feed incorporated with antibiotics (virginiamycin and oxy'tetracycline) at three different concentrations. Among the doses tested for virginiamycin 50 ppm treatment showed highest response for both maturation and growth. The mean weight increment for individual fish was observed to be 4.409 g. In oxy'tetracycline treatment 150 ppm gave positive result for total weight gain of the fishes.

    Effect of biofilter on the environmental parametersand growth of goldfish (Carassius auratus)

    The investigation was aimed at determining the effect of biofilter on the environmental parameters and growth of goldfish. The goldfish were reared in the flowthrough circular cement cisterns connected with biofilter unit and without biofilter. The important environmental parameters were estimated for a period of two months. The water pH and DO levels showed diurnal variation. The mean gross fish production was higher in the tank fitted with biofilter ( 29tg /5m3)than the tank without biofilter ( 2609 / 5m3)'

    Use of Fermented Fish Ensilage in the Diets of Etroplus suratensis (Bloch)

    A feeding experiment was conducted to assess the ability of Etroplus suratensis (Bloch) to utilize diets containing fish ensilage as a major protein source' Attempt was also made to find out whether the neutralization of the fermented ensilage influenced the growth of E. suratensis or not. No significant difference in the survival rate of fish fed with various feeds was noticed (P(0.05). However, significant difference could be observed in specific growth rate,(p<0.01), food conversion efficiency and protein efficiency ratio (P<0.05) The study revealed that the diets containing fish ensilage, either neutralized with calcium hydroxide or without neutralization could yield better wait gains(86.25% and 89.08% respectively ) than other feeds. E. suratensis could utilize the diets containing fish ensilage as the as hydroxide protein recorded lower wait gain (80.87%)the effect was more adverse when potassium hydroxide was used as the neutralizating agent (56.18%)
