Abstract
Karonda (Carissa carandas L.) belongs to the family Apocynaceae. Karonda is indigenous to India. The fruits are rich in iron and vitamin C. Not much research is done on storage method, period, bio-inoculants and growth regulators on germination and growth of this crop. Hence, research was conducted on this aspect in order to generate useful information for nursery techniques of Karonda. The experiment was conducted at Regional Horticultural Research and Extension Center, GKVK, Bengaluru during September, 2013 to April, 2014.
The first experiment was carried out to study the effect of storage on viability of karonda seeds, their germination and growth of seedlings. Among the treatments seeds stored in earthen pots had minimum reduction in the seed moisture percent 41.79 % and 15.97 % after two months and four months of storage respectively. Seeds stored in aluminium foil coated pouch in refrigerator recorded maximum germination per cent (56.67%), seedling height (12.91 cm), number of leaves (40.30) and fresh weight and dry weight of seedling (6.39 g and 3.17 g respectively) at 150 days after sowing.
In the second experiment carried out to study the effect of different bio-inoculants and growth regulators on germination of karonda seeds and growth of their seedlings shown that GA3 at 100 ppm recorded maximum germination per cent (70.00%), seedling height (14.99 cm), number of leaves (46.98) and fresh weight and dry weight of seedling (8.87 g and 4.66 g respectively) at 150 days after sowing.
It is concluded from the present investigation that seeds stored in aluminium foil coated pouch in refrigerator after two months of storage and treated with GA3 at 100ppm was found to be best for seed storage, germination and growth of seedlings.
