Abstract
The investigation on “Assessment of variability studies
in M3 lines of Okra [Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench]” was
carried out with the objectives to study the variability of macro and
micromutants in M3 generation, to isolate desirable mutants for
quantitative and qualitative characters, to study the stability of
mutants in M3 generation, to identify the desirable mutants for
yellow vein mosaic virus disease resistant and green fruit.
Hundred lines of okra comprising single plant selections
(from M2) based on mutagenesis studies for different gamma rays
doses (20kR, 30kR, 40kR), EMS doses (0.1, 0.2, 0.3 %) and
combination doses (20kR gamma + 0.1 % EMS, 30 kR gamma +
0.1% EMS, 40kR gamma + 0.1% EMS) along with control. The
treated seeds were sown in February, 2012 at All India Co
ordinated Vegetable Improvement Project, Department of
Horticulture, MPKV, Rahuri to raise M3 generation. The
observations were recorded on germination percentage, height of plant, number of branches per plant, days required for first flower
appearance and for first fruit set, number of nodes, length of third
and fifth intermode, length and diameter of fruit, green fruit yield
per plant, number of fruits per plant, chlorophyll content of fruit,
leaf, flower and fruit pigmentation, disease reaction for yellow vein
mosaic virus.
In M3 generation, there was reduction in percent
germination irrespective of doses. A wide range of variation was
found in all the quantitative characters studied but there was
adverse effect with increase in mutagenic doses on the characters
like plant height, days for flowering and fifth internode, length and
diameter of fruit, green fruit yield and chlorophyll content of fruit.
Dwarfest variant was of 82.3cm height whereas tallest
recorded 108.5cm height. Highest number of primary branches per
plant was of 3.4 while lowest was 1.6. Minimum days required for
first flower appearance and fruit set 36 and 40 days while
maximum days was 46 and 49 respectively. Number of nodes per
plant ranged between 13.6-19.8. Maximum length of third and fifth
internode was 4.96 and 5.6cm whereas minimum was 2.18 and
3.44cm respectively. Maximum length and diameter of fruit was
13.62 and 1.44cm while minimum was 9.26 and 1.20cm
respectively. Green fruit yield per plant ranged between 203.26gm
(0.1% EMS) to 268-74gm (40kR gamma+0.1% EMS). Gamma rays
treatments as well as mutagenic combination treatments were most
effective in inducing high yielding variants. Number of fruits per
plant showed variation from (13.2-18.6). Chlorophyll content of fruit showed variation from (0.0482-0.0536mg/g) and gamma rays
treatment exhibited plants with high chlorophyll content of fruit.
