Abstract
Sugarcane is one of the most important cash crop in Maharashtra also a major cash crop grown in Kolhapur district has brought about desirable changes in social, economical, educational and political spheres in the country in general and Maharashtra in particular. Maharashtra is a leading state in sugarcane and sugar production in the country occupying second position next to Uttar Pradesh. The Central Sugarcane Research Station, Padegaon under MPKV, Rahuri is a Central research centre working on sugarcane for Maharashtra state. Production of Jaggery from sugarcane is major cottage industry in India, nearly 2.5 million population is engaged in this business. Uttar Pradesh is leading state in Jaggery production and contributes about 63 per cent of total production in India. In Maharashtra only 11 per cent of total sugarcane produce is used for jaggery production. Kolhapur region is famous for its quality production and nearly 27 per cent of its total sugarcane produce is used for jaggery production. Considering importance, our university had made efforts to disseminate improved jaggery production technology in this area through Regional Sugarcane and Jaggery Research Station, Kolhapur. Hence, the present investigation was conducted with the objectives to study of jaggery processing technology followed by the farmers. To find out the relationship between selected characteristics and their knowledge and adoption. To study the constraints faced by jaggery making farmer and invite their suggestions. The present study was conducted in Karveer, Panhala and Shahuwadi tahasils of Kolhapur district. From each tahasil 3 villages were selected, from each selected village 5 respondents were selected on random selection basis who were cultivating sugarcane and processing jaggery. Hence, in all 45 farmers were randomly selected and personally interviewed. The study revealed that majority (66.67%) of the respondents belonged to the middle age group. Nearly half of respondents (46.67%) had received secondary education. It was observed that 73.34 per cent of the respondents had medium size of family and 31.12 per cent of the respondents belonged to category of small land holding between1.01 to 2.00 ha.
