Abstract
A field trial entitled, "Induction of seed dormancy in summer groundnut {Arachis hypogaea L.)" was conducted at Seed Technology Research Unit Farm, PGI, MPKV, Rahuri, Dist. Ahmednagar (Maharashtra) during Summer, 2007. In this experiment three genotypes viz., TG-26, TAG-24 and SB-XI sprayed with five concentrations of Maleic hydrazide viz., 250, 500, 750, 1000 and 1250 ppm along with control at two stages of crop growth viz., 60 and 90 DAS. A field trial was laid out in a factorial andomised block design with three replications and data obtained were analysed by using factorial completely randomised design. The various observations like germination (%), seedling vigour index I and II, seedling dry weight (g), moisture content (%), electrical conductivity (mmhos/cm), seed mycoflora (%) and 100 kernel weight were recorded at five days interval immediately after harvest. Shelling percentage, oil content (%) and protein content (%) were recorded at 0 and 65 DAH. Seed viability (TZ test %) and sound mature kernel (%) were recorded at 0 and 65 DAH, respectively. The studies revealed that, among the concentrations of MH the 1000 ppm was the most effective for inducing the dormancy, which could induce the dormancy upto 40 days, irrespective of varieties. Whereas, the concentration @ 250, 500, 750 and 1250 ppm could induce the dormancy upto 15, 20, 25 and 25 days, respectively irrespective of genotypes. The dormancy could be induced upto 30 days in varieties TG-26 and SB-XI irrespective of concentrations followed by TAG-24 in which only 5 days dormancy was induced irrespective of concentrations. The studies revealed that, the dormancy could be induced upto 45, 5 and 45 days in varieties TG-26, TAG-24 and SB-XI respectively, with spraying of Maleic hydrazide @ 1000 ppm. There was no fresh seed dormancy in the varieties viz., TG-26, TAG-24 and SB-XI and the germination observed was 79, 85 and 80 per cent, respectively at 0 DAH. The seed quality parameters viz., seedling vigour index I and II, and seedling dry weight (g) were reduced, while electrical conductivity (mm hos cm"1) increased due to induction of dormancy by MH spray @ 1000 ppm as compared to control and other concentrations of Maleic hydrazide applied in all the genotypes. The various seed quality parameters viz., seed mycoflora (%),100 kernel weight (g), shelling percentage, oil content (%),protein content (%), seed viability (%) and sound mature kernel (%) as influenced by various concentrations of MH applied remains unaffected. It is concluded that spray of MH @ 1000 ppm at 60 and 90 DAS was found to be effective in inducing seed dormancy in genotypes SB-XI and TG-26 upto 45 DAS whereas, it was only 5 days in variety TAG-24.
