Abstract
The present investigation on "Effect of sowing dates and topping on seed yield and seed quality of jute varieties" was undertaken with the object to study the effect of sowing dates and toppings on seed yield, seed yield attributing characters and seed quality parameters in jute. A field experiment in split-split plot design comprising of three main plot treatments (sowing dates), two sub plot treatments (varieties) and three sub-sub plot treatments (toppings) with three replications was conducted at Post Graduate Institute Research Farm of Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth, Rahuri during kharif 2001. Laboratory experiments were conducted in Factorial CRD at Seed Technology Research Unit (NSP), M.P.K.V., Rahuri. Analysis of variance revealed significant differences due to sowing dates for days to 50 % flowering and maturity, number of primary and secondary branches per plant, number of seeds per capsule/ pod and seed yield. As regard to seed quality 1000 seed weight, seed recovery and seedling dry matter showed significant differences due to sowing dates. Significant differences due to varieties were found for all seed yield attributing characters except days to maturity. Varieties also showed significant differences for 1000 seed weight, germination and seeding dry matter. Significant difference due to toppings were found for characters viz., days to 50 % flowering and maturity, number of primary branches per plant, number of capsules/ pods per plant, seed yield, 1000 seed weight and seedling dry matter. Jute seed yield and yield attributing characters as well as seed quality parameters like germination and seedling vigour index were high in early sown crop (2.7.01) as compared to other sowings. Seed quality parameters like 1000 seed weight, seed recovery and seedling dry matter were maximum in sowing date 15.7.01. Variety JRO-524 had better seed yielding ability while much seed quality parameters were maximum in seeds produced from variety JRC-212. Crop topped at 45 DAS showed better for- jute seed yield while seed quality parameters were not much affected by topping treatments. The jute variety JRO-524 sown on early July (2.7.01) and topped at 45 DAS recorded maximum seed yield (kg/ha). This proved to be a best treatment combination.
