Abstract
The investigation entitled, "Effect of invigoration on storability of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill) seeds" was carried out in the Seed Technology Research Unit, Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth, Rahuri. The two varieties of soybean, MACS-58 and PK-1029 were used for storage study. The seeds were stored in gunny and polylined gunny bag (400 gauge) upto 90 days. After 90 days, half of the seeds of each variety from each container were invigorated by moisture equilibriation soaking drying (ME-S-D) and moist and conditioning soaking drying (MSC-S-D) method. These treated seeds were stored at room temperature upto 270 days and observations recorded at every 30 days on various seed quality parameters. Among the containers, the poly lined gunny bag (PGB) was found to be the best for safe storage. The germination of seeds stored in PGB could maintained viability above MSCS upto 240 days. The invigorated seeds possessed higher germination, vigour and viability as compared to untreated seeds. The seeds invigorated by MSC-S-D had higher germination, vigour and viability as compared to ME-S-D method of invigoration. The germination, root-shoot length, vigour index, dry matter content, viability tested by TZ test of soybean seeds from all the treatments decreased during storage. While electrical onductivity, leaching of sugars increased during all the periods of storage. Moisture content of stored seeds was more or less similar at end of 270 days of storage though it was subjected to vigoration treatment. The present study indicates that storage for longer period could be achieved by storing the seeds in poly lined gunny bag and invigorated by MSC-S-D method of invigoration.
