Abstract
An experiment to study the "Effect of different plant density and fertilizer levels on seed yield, yield contributing characters and seed quality in Mucuna types {Mucuna prurita Hook)" was conducted at the research farm of the Scheme for Medicinal and Aromatic plants, MPKV, Rahuri, during kharif 1998-99. The experiment was laid out in Factorial Randomized Block Design with three replications and laboratory analysis to asses quality of seed produced under each treatment was carried out in the laboratory of -Seed Technology Research Unit (NSP) MPKV, Rahuri, using FCRD method. Varieties significantly influenced the seed yield per hectare and other characters except number of bunches per plant and number of seeds per pod. White variety recorded maximum germination count, number of branches, number of pods per plant, seed yield per plant, seed yield per plot, seed yield per hectare and 1000 seed weight. While atays to 50% flowering, number of flowers per bunch and number of pods per bunch were higher in Wild variety. Fertilizer application of 80 kg N, 80 kg P205 and 40 kg K20/ha recorded significantly higher results in all the parameters except germination count and 1000 seed weight. The spacing of 1 x 1 m2 recorded significantly higher number of branches, number of bunch per plant, number of pods per bunch and number of pods per plant, while seed yield per plot and seed yield per hectare was significantly more in 1 x 0.5 m2 spacing. However, remaining characters were not influenced by spacing. All characters and seed quality parameters under study except seed yield per plant, seed yield per plot and seed yield per hectare were not affected due to interaction effects. The seed yield per plant, per plot and per hectare were highest due to ViF3 interaction while seed yield per plot and per hectare were higher due to V,,S,combination. Only varieties affected seed quality parameters significantly. White variety recorded highest result in all seed quality parameters. In storage, Mucuna seed can be stored for one year safely in cloth bags under ambient condition at Rahuri without decrease in the germination and vigour index. However, these parameters were increased due to breaking of partial dormancy.
