Abstract
A field experiment entitled " Effect of fertilizer levels (NPK) with and without FYM on seed yield and seed quality of maize var. African Tall" was conducted at Post Graduate Institute Research Farm, Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth, Rahuri during Kharif, 2000. The trial was laid out in a Randomised Block Design with eight treatments replicated thrice. The soil of the experimental plot was medium deep (62 cm), well drai ed, low in available nitrogen (191.30 kg/ha), medium in available phosphorus (28.47 kg/ha), well supplied with available potash (345.48 kg/ha) and slightly alkaline in reaction (pH 8.2). Sowing was done on June 24, 2000 by dibbling. Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium were applied as per treatment. Nitrogen was applied in two equal splits, half at planting and remaining half at one month after sowing. Entire quantity of phosphorus, potassium and FYM (10 t/ha) was applied at sowing. The rainfall received during crop growth was erratic . The growth and yield attributes increased with successive increase in NPK levels. The treatments with FYM showed more favorable results than the same treatment without FYM. The treatment N3P3KF (120 N + 60 P2Os + 30 K20 kg/ha and 10 t/ha FYM ) gave fevorable results with seed recovery (96.06), germination percentage (93.93), vigour index (3761.006), 100 seed weight (27.05 gm), length of cob (17.10 cm), girth of cob (12.54 cm), number of seeds per cob (420.40) and seed yield per ha (39.67 q/ha). Thus, for higher and good quality seed production of maize var. African Tall, the treatment 120 N + 60 P205 +30 K20 kg/ha + 10 t/ha FYM was found desirable.
