Abstract
The present investigation was carried out to study the genetic variability, phenotypic and genotypic coefficients of variation, magnitude of heritability, genetic advance, inter character correlation and path analysis for quantitative characters in brinjal (Solarium melongena L.). Data were collected on 13 important characters measured on 30 genotypes evaluated during kharif, 1999 at the Instructional-cum-Research Farm of Department of Horticulture, Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth, Rahuri, Dist. Ahmednagar (M.S.). In general, the phenotypic coefficient of variations were higher than the genotypic coefficients of variation for all the characters. The highest genotypic coefficient of variation was observed for fruit shape index and the lowest for days to 50% flowering. The high heritability with high genetic advance was observed for fruit shape index and average weight of fruit, while high heritability with fairly moderate genetic advance was observed for height of plant, plant spread, number of fruits per plant, indicating high additive gene action and hence, these characters can be improved by selection. Correlation studies revealed that the characters viz., average weight of fruit, girth of fruit, breadth of fruit and number of primary branches were positively and significantly correlated with yield per plant and also strongly and significantly associated among themselves. However, path coefficient analysis showed the highest direct effect of girth of fruit followed by number of primary branches, average weight of fruit, length of fruit on yield per plant. Similarly, number of fruits per plant plant spread also showed positive direct effect while breadth of fruit indirectly contributed to yield. Hence, due emphasis should be given to these characters in the brinjal improvement programme.
