Abstract
The present investigation entitled, "Studies on extension of shelf life of custard apple (Annona squamosa L.) fruits" with six post harvest treatments and three packaging conditions was conducted under two storage conditions as a two separate experiments with three replications in Factorial ompletely Randomized Design. The treated custard apple fruits followed by packaging were stored at room temperature and in low cost, low energy input cool chamber. There was an increase followed by subsequent decrease in TSS, acidity and sugars uponprolonged storage of custard apple fruits under both the storage conditions irrespective of postharvest treatments and packaging materials. The physiological loss in weight increased in storage in all the post harvesttreatments with packagings and under both the storage conditions. Fruits storedin cool chamber followed the same trend of physico-chemical changes but at aslower rate. The shelf life of control fruit (untreated + unpacked) was found to be hardly 4 days at room temperature. However, fruits could be stored upto 7 dayswhen it was treated with waxol or waxol + KMn04 or waxol + NAA (30 ppm) and packed in individual wrapping polyfilm at room temperature. The shelf lifeof custard apple fruits was extended upto 11 days under the same abovetreatments when stored in cool chamber. Among these treatments, the fruitstreated with waxol + NAA (30 ppm) and packed in individual wrappingpolyfilm treatment registered the best with highest organoleptic score. Moreover, cool chamber had the added advantage of easy construction and low cost.
