Abstract
The present investigation on "Efficacy of grafting on bud sprout, survival and growth of scions in grapes {Vitis vinifera L.)" was carried out at Agronomy farm, College of Agriculture, Pune-5 from September to January during the year the 2002-2003. The experiment was laid out in the Randomised Block Design in four replicationswith eight treatment combinations. The four commercial varieties viz. Thompson Seedless, Tas-A-Ganesh, Sharad Seedless and Flame Seedless were grafted on Salt Creek and Dogridge rootstocks at 15th September, 2002. The rootstocks significantly influenced the bud sprouting, survival and growth parameters of scion varieties. The mean number of days required for bud swelling and bud sprouting were reduced in Thompson Seedless grafted on Salt Creek 6.93 days and 11.06 days respectively, as compared to other varieties on Dogridge rootstock. The per cent bud sprout and success percentage was also more on the Salt Creek rootstock than Dogridge rootstock. Thompson Seedless grafted on Salt Creek recorded the 91.40 per cent bud sprout and 87.50 survival percentage. The growth parameters in respect of mternodal length, Flame Seedless on Salt Creek recorded maximum internodal length (5.69 cm) in all the varieties. Thompson Seedless grafted on Salt Creek rootstock had highest numbers of leaves (37.25) than other three varieties and also recorded the maximum height (166.62 cm). The influence of rootstocks was also seen on girth of scion and stock. The disease incidence of powdery mildew with an intensity ranging between 8.59 % to 19.53 % and pest incidence of grasshoppers with an intensity ranging between 18.75 % to 39.06 % was seen in month of December and January respectively. There was significant influence of the climate on the bud sprout. The bud sprouting percentage ranged from 82.81 to 91.40 per cent. A overall assessment of the eight treatment combination with four scions and two rootstocks help us to conclude that, Thompson Seedless grafted on Salt Creek rootstock was the best treatment combination in all the eight treatment combinations, whereas Salt Creek rootstock gave better performance than Dogridge rootstock.
