Abstract
The present investigation entitled "Studies on inheritance of shoot and fruit borer resistance in brinjal (Solatium melongena L.)" was conducted at All India Co-ordinated Vegetable Improvement Project, Department of Horticulture, Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth, Rahuri during the year 1996-98.The objectives of the present investigations were to study theinheritance of shoot and fruit borer (Leucinodes orbonalis G.) resistance in brinjal and to propose appropriate breeding procedure to be followed to incorporate the shoot and fruit borer resistance into the susceptible cultivars of brinjal. In all, four hybrids in the set of six generations viz., Pj, P2, F], F2, B] and B2 were studied through generation mean analysis. Highly significant differences were observed in the mean valuesof Pi, P2, Fi, F2, B] and B2 of all the 4 crosses for thirteen characters (ninequantitative and four qualitative haracters) of economic importance. The additive gene effects (d) were predominant for all charactersthan dominant gene effects (h). In addition to major digenic effects (d and h), digenic interactions (i, j and 1) also played a vital role in the expression ofmost of the characters. Duplicate type of epistatis was served in most of the crosses.Based on the results of gene action it is concluded that selection procedurewill bring the desired improvement for various characters including fruit and shoot borer resistance in brinjal in all the crosses.
