Abstract
Investigation on "Effect of organic manures on yield and quality of bitter gourd (Memordica charantia L.) cv. Phule Green Gold" was carried out at Research Cum Instructional Farm, Department of Horticulture, Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth, Rahuri during the kharìf season of 2004. The experiment was consisted of ten treatments with three replications in randomized block design. FYM, neem cake and poultry manure were applied in combination at 25, 50 and 75 per cent levels for N source. Vermiphos and sulphate of potash were used as source of phosphorus and potassium, respectively. The quantity of P2O5 and K2O from organic manures were considered as bonus application in respective treatments. The objective of this experiment was to study the effect of various organic manures treatments on vine growth, flowering, yield and quality of fruits. xiii Abstract contd T.G. Mulani The growth parameter, length of vine was better with organic manures. The lower node number of first female flower ppearance and minimum number of days for 50 per cent flowering were observed with organic manure treatments. The maximum yield was produced with organic manure treatment T9 consisting of Neem cake (25 % N) + Poultry manure (75 % N) + Vermiphos + Sulphate of Potash + Package (Neem cake @ 200 kg/ha + Trìchoderma υirìdae @ 4 g/kg + Azotobacter @ 200 g/10 kg + Azospirillum@ 200 g/10 kg + PSB @ 200 g/10 kg + FYM @ 20 t/ha). Fruit characters viz., average weight, length, diameter and thickness of flesh of individual fruit were higher with organic manure treatments. As regards to the quality attributes such as keeping quality, the organically grown fruits showed superior performance. The chemical properties of soil viz., pH, EC and organic carbon content were found better with organic manure treatments. The availability of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium was observed significantly higher with organic manure treatments. Thus it could be concluded that, application of organic manures helped to improve quality of bitter gourd fruits with better growth and yield.
