Abstract
Six cultivars of rabi sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L) Moench) were exposed to osmotic stress induced by polyethyleneglycol (PEG-6000) and their proline accumulation potential was ascertained. Based on the differential proline accumulationpotential and growth response on light soil, three cultivarswere exposed to water stress by withholding irrigation in apot culture experiment. The investigations on metabolicalterations due to water stress revealed that the content of proline, free-amino acids and reducing sugars increased, whereas the iri vivo nitrate reductase activity and chlorophyllcontent decreased with an increase in the level of stress.High proline accumulating cultivar (Lakadi) showed leastreduction in in vivo nitrate reductase activity andchlorophyll content, whereas low proline accumulating cultivar(SPV-504) recorded maximum reduction in the iri vivo nitratereductase activity and chlorophyll content at all the stresslevels. The concof stress but the percentage increase over control was more inLakadi and less in SPV-504 at all the stress levels.
