Abstract
The present investigations were undertaken to understand the mechanism of action of Vipul in increasing yieldof field crops. For this, spinach was selected as a testmaterial. The spinach was grown under field conditions andfoliar sprays of Vipul was given 30 days after sowing.Sampling was carried on 5ยป 10, 15 and 20 days afterspraying of Vipul and yield was recorded on 50 days ofplant growth. The changes in chlorophyll, active iron contentactivities of catalase, peroxidase and polyphenol oxidase, and soluble protein and total protein from field grownspinach and changes in nitrate reductase activity in glass house conditions spinach were determined.contd....xiiM.Sc.(Agrl.) Abstract (contd....) .D.KadamThe results indicated a significant increase in thechlorophyll and active iron content of spinach leaves on15 and 20 days after spraying. The activities of catalaseand peroxidase increased significantly at 15 and 20 days after spraying of Vipul, The catalase activity wasincreased at 5 ppm concentration of Vipul than control anddecreased with decrease in age of plant. The peroxidaseactivity increased significantly over control at 5 ppmlevel whereas polyphenol oxidase activity was decreased sharply by foliar application of Vipul. The activity of nitrate reductase! was significantlyincreased over control throughout the plant rowth at 5 ppmlevel of Vipul. Soluble protein content was more in treatedplants than in control after 10 days of application of Vipul. The yield of spinach was increased 32.2 % over control and was found to be significant. The increase was maximumat 5 ppm level.
