Abstract
The present investigation entitled "Involvement of women in the management of selected natural resources in kandi area of Punjab" was carried out with the objectives to study the involvement of rural women in management and utilization of natural resources in kandi area of Punjab and to determine the acceptability of better management techniques of selected natural resources. The study was conducted in the Takarla village of Balachaur block in Nawanshahr district of Punjab. Multi stage random sampling technique was used to draw a sample of 100 women. PRA methods, a semi structural schedule and primary and secondary sources of information were used to collect data. The data were analyzed using frequencies, percentages, means, chi-square and regression analysis. The findings revealed that the perceptions of respondents regarding the effect of natural resource degradation on social, cultural, political, economical and ecological environment varied significantly. They used multiple sources to procure water and perceived water, fodder and fuel availability to be adequate for their requirements. A high percentage of respondents also perceived high level of degradation of natural resources such as water (89%), land (79%), fuel (72%), air (70%) and fodder (60%). Majority of the high socio-economic status families used LPG and electronic devices as fuel sources. Majority of low socio-economic status families spent more time and distance to gather fuel, fodder and water than medium and high socio-economic status families. Majority also perceived further depletion and degradation of natural resources such as air and water, denuding of forests and scarcity of fuel and fodder in the near future. Acceptability of solar cooker was found low in all socio-economic status categories of respondents. Whereas, it was found high in case of smokeless chullha.
