Abstract
A field experiment was carried out to study the “Heterosis and combining ability for yield and yield attributes in okra (Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench)”.The experimental material comprised of 7 parents, 21 hybrids produced through half-diallel and hybrid check from the parents GJO-3. The experiment was laid out in a randomized block design with 3 replications at Regional Horticultural Research Station (R.H.R.S.), Navsari Agricultural University, Navsari during late kharif 2012. The data were obtained for fifteen characters including fruit yield and its components. Significant differences were observed among parents and hybrids indicating considerable genetic variation among these genotypes. i The crosses JOL-11-12 × JOL-09-05, GJO-3 × JOL-10-18, GJO-3 × JOL-09-05 and JOL-09-07 × JOL-08-08 showed significant and desirable heterosis for fruit yield per plant over standard check. Combining ability analysis revealed importance of both additive and non additive genetic components for most of the traits. However, the sca variance component for the characters like days to 50% flowering, number of fruits per plant, fruit yield per plant, fruit length and fibre content has been found to be higher than respective gca variance which indicates predominant role of non-additive gene action for inheritance of these characters. Among 7 parents, JOL 09-05 was good general combiner for plant height, number of fruits per plant, fruit weight and fruit yield per plant, JOL 09-07 was good general combiner for fruit diameter, JOL 11- 12 was good general combiner for number of branches, fruit weight, number of fruits per plant and fruit yield per plant, JOL 11-07 was good general combiner for 100 seed weight, first flower node, fruit length and GJO-3 was good general combiner for fruit diameter, number of branches, number of seeds per fruit and fruit yield per plant.
