Dr. Y. S. Parmar University of Horticulture & Forestry, Solan

Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Solan, was established on 1st December, 1985 with the objective to promote education, research and extension education in the fields of Horticulture, Forestry and allied disciplines. Late Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar, the first Chief Minister and the architect of Himachal Pradesh perceived the importance of Horticulture and Forestry to develop and improve the State economy which led to the establishment of this University. Its history lies in erstwhile Himachal Agricultural College, Solan, established in 1962 and affiliated to the Panjab University. It became one of the campuses of Agriculture Complex of Himachal Pradesh University on its formation in 1970. Consequent upon the establishment of Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya in 1978, this campus became its Horticulture Complex and finally in 1985, assumed the status of a State University, being the only University in the country engaged exclusively in teaching, research and extension in Horticulture and Forestry. The University is located at Nauni in Solan District of Himachal Pradesh, 13 km from Solan on Solan-Rajgarh Road, at an elevation of 1300 metres above mean sea level. Solan town is situated on national highway (NH-22) and is well connected by train and bus services. The University has four constituent colleges, out of which, two are located at the main campus Nauni, one for horticulture and the other for forestry, having 9 and 7 departments, respectively. The third College i.e., College of Horticulture & Forestry is located at Neri in Hamirpur District on Nadaun-Hamirpur state highway, about 6 Km from Hamirpur town and is well connected with bus service. The college offers three Undergraduate Degree Programmes i.e. BSc (Hons.) Horticulture, BSc (Hons.) Forestry and B. Tech. Biotechnology and MSc degree programme in a few subjects. The fourth college i.e. College of Horticulture and Forestry, Thunag (Mandi) is located at Thunag District Mandi. This college offer BSc (Hons.) Horticulture and BSc (Hons.) Forestry degree programme. In addition, there are five Regional Research Stations, 12 Satellite Stations and five Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) situated in different zones of the State.

    VERTICAL VARIATION IN PHYSICO-CHEMICAL AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF Toona ciliata M. Roem.

    ABSTRACT The present research entitled “Vertical variation in physico-chemical and mechanical mechanicalof Toona ciliata M. Roem.” was carried out in the Laboratory and Wood Workshop in the Department of Forest Products, College of Forestry, Dr Y S Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan (HP) during 2018-19 and 2019-20. Toona ciliata tree of age about thirty-fiveyear was felled and converted into seven logs (base 0%, 15%, 30%, 45%, 60%, 75% and 90%) of total bole height to investigate the physical, chemical and strength properties of the wood. It showed significant variation along the bole height. The values of diameter, bark percentage ranged between 24.90 cm (90%) to 52.00 cm (base) and 5.21 per cent (90%) to 7.72 per cent (base), respectively. The maximum moisture content (143.61%) was maximum at 90 per cent and minimum (103.96%) at base. Maximum specific gravity (0.591) was recorded from base and minimum (0.481) was recorded from 90 per cent. The values for fibre length and fibre diameter ranged between 0.96 mm (90%) to 1.09 mm (base) and 0.020 mm (90%) to 0.026 mm (base), respectively. The cold water-soluble extractives, hot water-soluble extractives, alcohol-benzene soluble extractives, holocellulose content, lignin content and ash content ranged between 4.73 per cent (90%) to 6.05 per cent (base), 7.33 per cent (90%) to 8.15 per cent (base), 7.19 per cent (90%) to 8.93 per cent (base), 69.33 per cent (base) to 71.37 per cent (90%), 22.18 per cent (90%) to 24.07 per cent (base) and 1.72 per cent (base) to 2.70 per cent (90%) of total bole height, respectively. The tensile strength, bending strength, compressive strength parallel to grain, compression strength perpendicular to grain, bending modulus of rupture, modulus elasticity in tensile strength, modulus of elasticity in bending strength, modulus of elasticity compression parallel to grain, modulus of elasticity compression perpendicular to grain were ranged between 0.043 kN/mm2 (90%) to 0.077 kN/mm2 (base), 0.009 kN/mm2 (90%) to 0.012 kN/mm2 (base), 0.049 kN/mm2 (90%) to 0.054 kN/mm2 (base), 0.015 kN/mm2 (90%) to 0.028 kN/mm2 (45%), 0.211 kN/mm2 (90%) to 0.225 kN/mm2 (base), 0.697 kN/mm2 (90%) to 1.287 kN/mm2 (15%), 7.424 kN/mm2 (90%) to 10.551 kN/mm2 (base), 0.477 kN/mm2 (60%) to 0.784 kN/mm2 (base) and 0.045 kN/mm2 (15%) to 0.088 kN/mm2 (30%), respectively.
