Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth, Akola

Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth, Akola was established on 20th October, 1969 with its head-quarter at Akola. This Agricultural University was named after the illustrious son of Vidarbha Dr. Panjabrao (alias Bhausaheb) Deshmukh, who was the Minister for Agriculture,Govt. of India. The jurisdiction of this university is spread over the eleven districts of Vidarbha. According to the University Act 1983 (of the Government of Maharashtra), the University is entrusted with the responsibility of agricultural education, research and extension education alongwith breeder and foundation seed programme. The University has its main campus at Akola. The instructional programmes at main campus are spread over in 5 Colleges namely, College of Agriculture, College of Agricultural Engineering & Technology, College of Forestry, College of Horticulture and Post Graduate Institute. At this campus 4 degree programmes namely B.Sc.(Agri.) B.Sc. (Hort.), B.Sc. (Forestry) and B.Tech. (Ag. Engg.) , two Master’s Degree Programmes viz. M.Sc.(Agri.) and M.Tech. (Agri.Engg.) and Doctoral Degree Programmes in the faculties of Agriculture and Agril. Engineering are offered. The University has its sub-campus at Nagpur with constituent College, College of Agriculture which offers B.Sc.(Agri.) and M.Sc.(Agri.) degree programmes. The Nagpur Campus is accomplished with a garden, surrounded by its natural beauty and a well established Zoo which attract the general public and visitors to the city. A separate botanic Garden is being maintained on 22 hectares with a green house for the benefit of research workers. In addition there are 2 affiliated grant-in-aid colleges and 14 private non-grant-in-aid colleges under the umbrella of this University A Central Research Station is situated at the main Campus which caters to the need of research projects undertaken by Crop Scientists of the principle crops of the region are Cotton, Sorghum, Oilseeds and Pulses.

    The present study entitled "Entrepreneurial Behaviour of Garlic Growers” was conducted in Akola district of Maharashtra State. The respondents were selected by using random sampling method for present study. The main objectives of the study were the entrepreneurial behaviour of the respondents, the constraints encountered and suggestions given by the respondents in garlic cultivation by using exploratory design of social research with data were collected by personally interviewing with help of pretested and well structure interview schedule. The collected data were applied to appropriate statistical methods and analysis. The score was assigned to measure independent and dependent variables and percentage was worked out to describe the characteristics of garlic growers. Coefficient of correlation was worked out to find the relationship between the variables. The silent findings of the study revealed that more than half of the respondents belongs to middle age group (52.50%) and educated up to college level (55.00%). Majority of garlic growers were having agriculture as their main occupation (83.30%). Half of the garlic growers had Rs. up to 4 lakh their annual income (50.00%). Most of the garlic growers possessed semi-medium land holdings 2.01 to 4 ha (41.67%). More than half of garlic growers had 0.1 to 0.4 ha area under garlic (60.00%). Majority of respondents (88.33%) had well / tube well as their irrigation source. More than half of the respondents belongs to medium extension contact (56.67%). Nearly half of the respondents belongs to medium level of social participation (40.84%). Nearly majority of the respondents belongs to medium scientific orientation (72.50%). Further, it was observed that, 76.70 per cent of the garlic growers possessed medium overall entrepreneurial behaviour. Whereas, in case of entrepreneurial behaviour components, most of the respondents had medium level of innovativeness (71.00 per cent), achievement motivation (63.30 per cent), economic motivation (60.00 per cent), risk preference (66.70 per cent), decision making ability (59.00 per cent) and leadership ability (88.34 per cent). The relational analysis revealed that, the socio-economic characteristics like education, occupation, annual income, land holdings, area under garlic, social participation extension contact and scientific orientation had positive and significant relationship with entrepreneurial behaviour. while the variable age had found to be negative and significantly correlated with entrepreneurial attributes. Further, remaining characteristics of garlic growers such as sources of irrigation did not establish any significant relationship with entrepreneurial behaviour of the respondents. The findings of the constraints faced by the garlic growers as perceived that, It can be observed from Table 29 that, fluctuation of rates in garlic (89.16%), lack of information about garlic cultivation (87.50%) and power cut off (80.00%) is the majority of the respondent’s problem. Scarcity of water (58.33%) is the nearly half of the respondents problem. potential market away from garlic cultivation area (31.16%) is the some of the respondent’s problem. The suggestion to overcome the constraints as suggested by the garlic growers are need of scientific information about garlic cultivation (98.33%), stability in rates for garlic (91.66%), availability of continuous power supply (87.50%), availability of local market facility (80.33%).
