A Study on Economics of Cultivation of Okra and Cucumber in South 24 Parganas District of West Bengal
(Department of Agricultural Economics, Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Mohanpur, Nadia – 741252, 2024-10-23) Haldar, Suryashis
The study has been conducted in South 24 Parganas district in West Bengal. Two blocks namely Mandirbazar and Kulpi have been selected purposely in the district. From each block one village has been selected purposively. The study has encompassed two crops such as okra and cucumber grown in summer season. For each crop thirty sample agricultural households growing the crop have been selected by the technique of Simple Random Sampling Without Replacement. Ultimately sixty sample agricultural households have been selected for these two crops. Necessary primary data have been collected from these selected farmers. These two crops are important in respect of its coverage of large area and generation of household agricultural income in the selected blocks. The study has been carried out with objectives of finding socio-economic condition of agricultural households growing these crops. Two other objectives have been set to work out returns, costs associated with cultivation of these crops and compare profitability of these two crops. Tabular method of analysis has been extensively used in the study. The reference period the study is 2022-23 agricultural year. Results of the study have been explained with inter-size class and inter-crop comparison. The results of the study have indicated a slightly larger family size of the households growing cucumber as compared to that of the households growing okra. Education status of the later is higher than the former. Average size of operational holding of okra cultivators is slightly larger than that of cucumber cultivators. There is no wide difference between these two categories of agricultural households in respect of percentage area under these crops and cropping intensity. A higher level of cost of cultivation per hectare has been estimated for cucumber than for okra. But cost of production per quintal of okra is considerably higher than that of cucumber. Gross return, net return per hectare and return-cost ratio are exorbitantly higher in cucumber cultivation than in okra cultivation. Differences in per hectare costs of cultivation, gross returns and net returns between these two crops have been estimated as Rs. 13257, Rs. 549020 and Rs. 548452 respectively. Effect of higher average yield of cucumber has superseded the effect of higher average price of okra. This has resulted in superiority of cucumber over okra in fetching higher net return per hectare for the cucumber cultivators. It would a rational decision of the farmers if they allocate resources to both these crops proportionately to the share of returns earned from per unit area.
