EFFECT OF INTERVENTION ON DEVELOPMENTAL STATUS OF CHILDREN AND HEALTH AND NUTRITIONAL STATUS OF TRIBAL FAMILIES
(PROFESSOR JAYASHANKAR TELANGANA STATE AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY, 2017) MAHARSHI DEEPA
India has the world's second largest concentration of tribal population, next only to Africa. The 461 tribal groups of the country with a population of 104,281,034 (2011 census) account for about one fourth of the world tribal population. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana consists of total 34 tribal groups and they constitute population of about 4.4 million. Banjaras were called with different names such as Banjaras, Sugalis and Lambadas. Nearly 10 percent of population lives in Telangana region, three percent live in Rayalseema and two percent live in Andhra region. Despite of various schemes designed and implemented for the development of indigenous tribal people, still the gap exists in knowledge dissemination. Experimental research design was carried out to conduct the study. It is a systematic scientific approach in research, in which the researcher provides intervention for only one group, called as experimental group and another group was called as control group for which intervention was not provided. Pre and post test scores of both the groups were compared and ultimate difference in the experimental group was taken. Study was conducted in Mahabubnagar district. Tribal couples in the age group of 18 30 years and having children below six years were selected as sample for the study. Total 125 tribal families were selected for the study and sample comprised of men and women from these selected tribal families. Total sample comprised of 250 members. NAME : M. SARADA DEVI PROFESSOR & UNIVERSITY HEAD DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN DEVELOPMENT AND FAMILY STUDIES University : PROFESSOR JAYASHANKAR TELANGANA STATE AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY, HYDERABAD. Year of submission : 2017 xiv Series of intervention programmes were provided to tribal families to increase the awareness level on family life education, health and nutritional status. The intervention programmes were provide weekly twice for a period of four months. These programmes were conducted with the assistance of anganwaadi workers, health workers and staff of other line departments. Intervention programme was planned for infants along with parents to improve the motor skills and cognitive skills. Parents were educated on importance of intervention programme and signs of developmental delays. Weekly stimulation activities were carried out by the investigator with help of aganwaadi helpers and parents. Early stimulation for infants, awareness, education and training of the parents on developmental mile stones, child care practices, stimulating activities with indigenous material helped the children who were at risk of developing developmental delays to improve their developmental status to normal level. Early intervention programme proved to be very effective in improving the motor and cognitive skills among the younger children. There is a significant difference in motor and mental scores in the experimental group after intervention. Most of the children performed better on motor and mental skills after the intervention. Results of the study revealed that the majority of younger children were identified with developmental delays. Developmental delays were more predominant after three months of age and more prevalent up to nine months of age. It was found that awareness on family life education was found to be low among the respondents, most of new borns were given bath immediately after birth. Most of the sample had low awareness on correct age at marriage for boys and girls. Ignorance was one of the reason for early marriages among tribal families. Lack of awareness on importance of iron during pregnancy resulted in poor intake of folic acid tablets during pregnancy. Majority of respondents had low awareness on frequency of antenatal checkups to be carried out. Food consumption pattern and nutrient intake per day was revealed that nutrient intake was less than the recommended allowance. Women were in low nutritional status than men in mild grade of malnutrition, very few women were severely malnourished. It was also evident that there was a significant difference in the awareness level of experimental group before and after intervention. More difference was seen in aspects of safe mother hood, child care practices, family cohesion and family planning. Training content was prepared with the help of experts, to disseminate the related information for the intervention programme. Hence it can be concluded that intervention at early age reduces the magnitude of problem in latter stages and intervention designed to increase the awareness was also found to be more effective as it was based more on felt needs of the respondents.

TRENDS IN PERCEPTION OF SEXUAL RELATIONSHIPS
(ACHARYA N. G. RANGA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY, RAJENDRANAGAR, HYDERABAD, 2014) PANDEY, ALKA; MAYURI, K
The term “sex” is often used without definition despite its variety of implied meanings. Alfred Kinsey defined sex as physical behaviour that results in orgasm. Sexuality is mediated through socio-cultural & psychological factors as well as biological capacity, political ideologies and systems. This makes it a difficult subject to study. However, despite of these difficulties, sexuality must be studied because it permeates most aspects of human existence. Present study carried out to understand trends in perception on sexual relationship of different age group and both gender people. The study also investigates effect of selected independent variables on the dependent variable and determinants of perception on sexual relationship, for this purpose Perception of sexual relationship scale (PSRS) were developed. Hyderabad and Secunderabad city was purposively chosen as locale of the study. 400 educated respondents from IT, MNC, Education, Banking and Students of different age groups were purposively selected. Test-retest and split half methods were used to find out reliability. The test retest reliability for the scale was r=0.96 and split half reliability was r=0.87 at 0.01 level of probability. Content validity of the scale was obtained by seeking expert advice. Data was analyzed by using descriptive statistics (percentages and frequencies), chi2 test, and step down regression. Result of the study indicated that women defined love as understanding, caring, respect and emotional bonding. Whereas men said it is friendship, passion, concern, care and emotional attachment. Men believe more in love at first sight than women and thought non verbal expression and giving emotional and moral support is the best way to express love, whereas women thought verbal expression is the best way. Both men and women agreed on certain aspects such as often sexual attraction was mistaken for love, premarital sex happens when two persons consider themselves in love, understanding nature is the most important trait for love, physical appearance, and education were the most important characteristics to impress opposite sex, premarital sex in not acceptable, marital sex can be performed as frequently as couple feel, due to sexual dissatisfaction marital discord is on the rise. Self cantered behaviour, difference of opinion, poor listening skills were the main reasons of the breakup of a romantic relationship for both men and women. Young women get involved in premarital sex because of the fear of losing a partner whereas young men felt due to sexual attraction it happens. Unwanted pregnancy was the most important repercussion of pre marital sex. Most of the men and women would like to discuss premarital sex related issues with their same gender friends. Good communication and love between couples were the main reason for satisfaction whereas lack of understanding each other’s needs and too much job related stress were the main reasons of dissatisfaction. Three important repercussions of sexual dissatisfaction were frequent fights between couples, finding fault in partner and reduced communication between them. Approximately 50-70 percent men and women agreed on taking expert advice (counsellor) to revitalize sexual and inter personal relationships. Most men thought both male and female equally involve in extramarital marital affaires whereas most of the women thought, men involve more in extramarital affair. According to them people get involve in extramarital relationships to fulfill their unsatisfied sexual needs. Most of the men thought, when partner does not satisfy sexual needs and desire for varied partner motivate people to involve in a sexual relationship whereas women thought, when communication with a partner is not amicable and when partner did not fulfill other needs like emotional support, intellectual companionship etc. then people get involved in extramarital sex. Main repercussions of extramarital affairs for both men and women were divorce, desertion, frequent arguments and fights between couples, lacking in warmth and affection. Most of the younger respondents disagreed on decline in sexual desires and performances whereas older respondents agreed. Most of the men and women did not accept violence in a sexual relationship and agreed on increase in promiscuity and sexual perversions, women display more conservative attitudes towards sex than men, women enjoy sex as much as men, men need sex more often than women, emotional connection is necessary for women to enjoy sex, modern gadgets are interfering in sexual life and the free availability of pornography is the reason for sexual problems among people. It is interesting to note that individuals who were satisfied from their life, whose marital enjoyment level was high and stress level was low, held normal self esteem, highly social desirable, high level of emotional intelligence, whose family environment was good, had androgynous gender orientation, fell under average categories of emotional intelligence; held more liberal view on sexual issues. Respondents whose life satisfaction, social desirability, self esteem and emotional intelligence level was low, from unfavourable family environment, whose marital enjoyment level was low and marital stress levels were high were more conservative. No respondent fell under high categories of PSRS showed Indians are still not thinking liberally on sex related issues. Women were found to be more conservative than men even though they scored well on other scales. Younger & older respondent’s marital stress level was low & marital enjoyment level was high due to lack of responsibilities. Main determinants of perception on sexual relationships of 21-50yrs & above males and females were marital enjoyment, marital stress, self esteem, social desirability, family environment, expressiveness, security, conformity, tradition, benevolence, universalism, self direction, stimulation, hedonism, achievement, power and interpersonal relationship.
