University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad

The University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad was established on October 1, 1986. The University has 5 Colleges, 27 Research Stations, 6 Agriculture Extension Education Centers, 6 Krishi Vigyan Kendras and ATIC. The University has its jurisdiction over 7 districts namely Bagalkot, Belgaum, Bijapur, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, and Uttar Kannada in northern Karnataka. Greater diversity exists in soil types, climate, topography cropping and farming situations. The jurisdiction includes dry-farming to heavy rainfall and irrigated area. Important crops of the region include sorghum, cotton, rice, pulses, chilli, sugarcane, groundnut, sunflower, wheat, safflower etc. The region is also known for many horticultural crops. Considerable progress has been registered in the field of education, research and extension from this University.

    PROFILE OF SELF-HELP GROUPS AND THEIR CONTRIBUTION FOR LIVESTOCK DEVELOPMENT IN KARNATAKA

    "The study was conducted during February-March 2003 in Chitradurga and Bidar districts of Karnataka covering 32 SHGs. The objective were to study the changes in socio-economic conditions of SHG members, quantify the benefits received and utilized for livestock development, identify members motivation level, assess SHGs performance linkage with various livestock development organization and analyze their strengths and weaknesses. The findings of the study revealed that, there was an increase in income of 40 per cent of respondents after joining SHGs. There was increase in number of livestock possessed by the members after joining SHGs. Total number of loans availed for livestock formed 7.26 percent and the amount contributed towards livestock activities was 22.75 per cent. Major portion of loans disbursed by SHGs was for agriculture (43.63%) followed by social functions (21.85%), enterprise activity (14.02%) and livestock (7.26%). It was observed that nearly 94.00 per cent of respondents showed increase in motivation level after joining SHGs, NGO intervention was the major factor (84.00%), which motivated the members to join SHGs . Majorities of SHGs were in medium category of performance level (53.00%) where as 33.00 per cent of them were in high performance category. Linkages of SHGs were better with NGOs (93.00%) followed by bank (53.00%) and dairy co-operatives (46.00%). Team strength and lack of timely support from banks/other organizations (60.00%) were the major strength and weaknesses expressed by SHGs, respectively. More scope to strengthen poor and weaker sections and no proper policy to fund SHGs were the major opportunity and threat expressed by SHGs, respectively. As livestock enterprise received an encouraging 22.75 per cent loan, it is recommended to develop SHG friendly livestock funding policy by the funding organizations to orient from crop based to livestock based agriculture."
