University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad

The University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad was established on October 1, 1986. The University has 5 Colleges, 27 Research Stations, 6 Agriculture Extension Education Centers, 6 Krishi Vigyan Kendras and ATIC. The University has its jurisdiction over 7 districts namely Bagalkot, Belgaum, Bijapur, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, and Uttar Kannada in northern Karnataka. Greater diversity exists in soil types, climate, topography cropping and farming situations. The jurisdiction includes dry-farming to heavy rainfall and irrigated area. Important crops of the region include sorghum, cotton, rice, pulses, chilli, sugarcane, groundnut, sunflower, wheat, safflower etc. The region is also known for many horticultural crops. Considerable progress has been registered in the field of education, research and extension from this University.

ECO-FRIENDLY MANAGEMENT OF SOYBEAN POD BORERS WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO Cydia ptychora (Meyrick) (LEPIDOPTERA : TORTRICIDAE)
(University of Agricultural Science, Dharwad, 2005) Abhilash, C; Patil, R H
"Investigations were carried out to compute the EIL (economic injury level) of soybean pod borer Cyd'ia ptychora (Meyrick) and to test the efficacy of organic amendments, biorationais and new generation chemicals against the pod borers of soybean at Main Agricultural Research Station, Dharwad during the year 2004. The crop loss estimation under glasshouse condition revealed a significant and positive correlation between the number of larvae per plant and reduction in grain weight. Based on the regression analysis and gain threshold, the EIL of C. ptychora was computed to be 0.45 larva/plant. Among the combinations of organic amendments, RDF + FYM + NC was the best combination recording least per cent pod damage and highest grain yield of soybean. Also, application of neem cake either in half dose (250 kg/ha) or full dose (500 kg/ha) had no significant difference when combined with RDF and FYM or RDF and vermicompost. Among the botanicals, NSKE (neem seed kernel extract) 5 per cent was found best. The effect of organic amendments and biorationais on the incidence of the mycopathogen, Nomuraea n/ey/(Farlow) Samson revealed that organic amendments did not affect the mycopathogen, but among the biorationais, vermiwash was safer to N. rileyi. Also, organic amendments did not affect the predators viz., coccinellids and chrysopids eventhough, among the biorationais, vermiwash was safer to these predators. When the new generation chemicals were evaluated along with certain ecofriendly components for their efficacy against pod borers, it was noticed that spinosad, lambdacyhalothrin and indoxacarb were better recording highest yield and lowest per cent pod damage, but they were detrimental to the mycopathogen, N. rileyi and predators viz., coccinellids and chrysopids. But, the highest B:C ratio was noticed in vitex leaf extract."
