University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad

The University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad was established on October 1, 1986. The University has 5 Colleges, 27 Research Stations, 6 Agriculture Extension Education Centers, 6 Krishi Vigyan Kendras and ATIC. The University has its jurisdiction over 7 districts namely Bagalkot, Belgaum, Bijapur, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, and Uttar Kannada in northern Karnataka. Greater diversity exists in soil types, climate, topography cropping and farming situations. The jurisdiction includes dry-farming to heavy rainfall and irrigated area. Important crops of the region include sorghum, cotton, rice, pulses, chilli, sugarcane, groundnut, sunflower, wheat, safflower etc. The region is also known for many horticultural crops. Considerable progress has been registered in the field of education, research and extension from this University.

    Management of microfinancial institutions and their functioning in empowerment of rural poor in kolar district

    The study was conducted during Jan-Mar 2007 in Gowribidanur, Chickballapur and Shidlaghatta taluks of Kolar district covering 30 SHGs. The objectives were to study the structural and functional characteristics of SHGs, impact of SHGs on socio-economic empowerment of members, socio-economic profile of members, the difficulties encountered as well as their suggestions. The members of the SHGs were interviewed. The findings of the study revealed that among the sample size of 30 SHGs, 73.33 per cent of them were above 4 years of age and 26.67 per cent of them were 4 years. With respect to frequency of meeting 100 per cent of the groups conducted weekly meetings and 96.66 per cent groups had attendance above 75 per cent. In 80 per cent of the groups repayment of loan to bank was regular and no groups had conflicts frequently, 43.33 per cent of groups have 13-15 membership. There was increase in overall index of social and economic empowerment of the members and also there was significant impact on economic indicators like income, employment, assets, consumption, investment and savings of the members after joining SHG. The socio economic profile reveals that majority of the members were middle aged (50.67%), married (84.67%), illiterates (35.33%) with nuclear families (83.33%). They were mostly marginal farmers (30.67%) with land less than 2.5 acres. Majority of the members were facing marketing problems followed by production problems. The members put forth several suggestions including quick release of loan (74.66%), improving marketing facilities (90.66%), lower the interest rate (86.00%) and increase in loan amount.
