The University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad was established on October 1, 1986.
The University has 5 Colleges, 27 Research Stations, 6 Agriculture Extension Education Centers, 6 Krishi Vigyan Kendras and ATIC. The University has its jurisdiction over 7 districts namely Bagalkot, Belgaum, Bijapur, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, and Uttar Kannada in northern Karnataka. Greater diversity exists in soil types, climate, topography cropping and farming situations. The jurisdiction includes dry-farming to heavy rainfall and irrigated area. Important crops of the region include sorghum, cotton, rice, pulses, chilli, sugarcane, groundnut, sunflower, wheat, safflower etc. The region is also known for many horticultural crops.
Considerable progress has been registered in the field of education, research and extension from this University.

A. NITHYA SHREEThe study was conducted at College of Rural Home Science, Dharwad under the University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, Karnataka. The ex-post facto research design was adopted in order to study the attitude of students towards Home Science degree programme and their educational, social, occupational and economic aspirations. A total of 411 students had enrolled in undergraduate, post–graduate and Ph.D. programme during the academic year 2014-15. The data was collected from 407 students. Findings of the study revealed that 71.01 per cent had favourable attitude where as 28.25 per cent had more favourable attitude and only 0.74 per cent had less favourable attitude towards Home Science degree programme. It was also observed that age of the respondents and their fathers’ occupation was significantly correlated with their attitude towards Home Science degree programme. Regarding educational aspirations, majority of the undergraduate students (59.10%) wanted to do masters in Home Science (M.H.Sc.), 64.70 per cent of the post–graduate students wanted to do Ph.D and among Ph.D students, 66.66 per cent wanted to do post–graduate diploma. In case of social aspiration, 29.58 per cent and 47.22 per cent of the students from undergraduate and post–graduate level aspired to develop the rural communities. With regard to Ph.D. students, equal percentage of the students (29.17%) aspired to develop the rural communities, to get social recognition and to develop the nation. With reference to occupational aspirations, most of them preferred administrative jobs in the government departments with a monthly salary between Rs.20,001–30,000/-. There was a significant difference between the levels of educational, social, occupational and economic aspirations among UG, PG and Ph.D. students.ThesisItem Open Access NUTRITIONAL EDUCATION - A STRATEGY FOR MANAGEMENT OF KIDNEY STONES(University of Agricultural Sciences Dharwad, 2014-10) VANISHRI K. UMARJI; Dr.USHA MALAGIKidney stone disease is among the most painful and prevalent urologic disorders. An investigation was undertaken with an objective to assess the nutritional status, food habits of kidney stone patients and to develop nutrition education material and to assess its impact on management of kidney stones. About 100 kidney stone patients were selected from local hospitals of Hubli - Dharwad. Educational intervention was given to 30 selected kidney stone patients and equal number of age and gender matched controls were not given any intervention. Nutrition education was given for 2 months on different aspects of kidney stones and its management through power point presentations, flash cards and booklet. Knowledge and diet related modification and practices were assessed before and after the intervention. The results of the study revealed that, sedentary life style, higher body weight, less fluid intake, higher consumption of purine, oxalate and sodium rich foods and genetic predisposition had contributed to the risk of urolithiasis. Maximum patients in both experimental and control groups had low knowledge scores about the disorder (40% vs 43.33%), followed by moderate knowledge (33.33% vs 13.33%). knowledge level of kidney stone patients was positively associated with education level. After the intervention, knowledge gain with regard to the disease was significantly higher in experimental group compared to control group (experimental: 41.67±8.04% vs control: 1.98±2.08%). About 53.33 per cent subjects showed positive improvement in their dietary and life style pattern after the intervention viz., increased water and fluid consumption, restricting salt, tea, bakery products, sugar, animal foods, fats, purine and oxalate rich foods. It can be concluded that, nutrition education is useful in increasing the knowledge and the practices pertaining to diet modifications and life style factors.ThesisItem Open Access Asymmetrical outfits with variegated hemlines(UASD) Shabinabanu S. Nadaf; Shailaja D. NaikThe present investigation on ‘Asymmetrical outfits with variegated hemlines’ was carried out during 2012-2014 with the objectives to ascertain the information on various silhouettes for upper and lower garments available in local market, to explore the possibilities of adapting new silhouettes and develop asymmetrical garments with variegated hemlines and embellishments for women and finally to assess the cost of production. The methodology involved survey and experimental procedures. According to the survey results of readymade garment shop owners and college going girls of Hubli-Dharwad corporation area, and opinion of the textile experts, five styles of tops and skirts were designed for college girls, by design forecasting, developing mood board, colour & fabric swatch and illustration boards. Initially 15 sketches of different styles of tops with variegated collars, sleeves and skirts with different silhouettes and hem lengths were illustrated and obtained the preference by the textile experts. Five each skirts and tops were finally selected from the 15 illustrations and taken further for construction. A display was organized to know the acceptance for these asymmetrical outfits by college girls and textile experts. The respondents expressed that the concept of designing asymmetrical styles and their appearance to be excellent. The skirts and tops were designed and constructed incorporating variegated princess stylelines, collars, sleeves, silhouettes, hem lengths for skirts and value addition. The respondents irrespective of the categories, opined that the most appealing and accepted designers asymmetrical outfit was ‘handkerchief skirt and shawl collar top with set-in sleeve’ followed by ‘circular skirt and shirt collar top with puff sleeve’, ‘peplum skirt and mandarin collar top with shirred sleeve’, ‘fishtail skirt and convertible collar top with leg-o-mutton sleeve’, and least being ‘bell skirt and bow tie top with bell sleeve’. The study further throws light on designing asymmetrical outfits for normal and physically challenged girls. Fashion designers may focus on lop-sided garments incorporating several texture, colour ways, fullness, and surface ornamentation.
