(University of Agricultural Science, Dharwad, 2017-08) Sujatha M.; Uppar, D.S.
The investigation was undertaken to know the influence of provenances, seed forms, storage conditions and packaging materials on seed longevity in groundnut. The results were analysed in CRD with factorial concept. The seed materials were produced at different locations viz., Dharwad, Bagalkot and Kumta during summer season of 2015-16 and stored during 2016-17 in their respective places under ambient condition and cold storage condition at cold storage unit Dharwad in HDPE bag, polylined gunny bag and vacuum packing in the form of pod and kernel for 12 months. Seed materials were collected bimonthly from respective places to assess the seed quality parameters in laboratory of Department of Seed Science and Technology and National Seed Project, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad. The results revealed that the seeds produced in Bagalkot (L1) and stored as pod in vacuum packing under ambient and cold condition recorded significantly higher seed germination (68.00 and 69.75 %), seedling length (18.36 and 18.20 cm), seedling vigour index (1248 and 1270), seedling dry weight (231 and 245 mg), mobilization efficiency (6.21 and 6.53 %), oil content (47.59 and 47.88 %) and protein content (31.06 and 31.19 %), respectively at the end of 12 months of storage compared to other locations, seed forms and packaging material. Other seed quality parameters like electrical conductivity (0.929 and 0.776 dS/m), lipase activity (0.54 and 0.53 μ moles min-1), protease activity (0.262 and 0.245 U/ml), moisture content (7.05 and 7.31 %) were significantly lower throughout the storage period in the pods produced in Bagalkot and stored in vacuum packing under both ambient and cold condition respectively, compared to other treatments. Bagalkot is suitable for both production and storage of summer groundnut and the seeds stored in vacuum packing showed better storability under both storage conditions.

tudies on Age of Seedlings, Fruit Retention Load, Shoot and Fruit Borer Control and Seed Invigoration Techniques to Enhance Seed Yield and Quality in Brinjal (Solanum melongena L.)
(University of Agricultural Science, Dharwad, 2016-06) Bhanuje, Tejagouda; Raikar, S.D.
The field experiments were conducted at farmer’s field Chinchali village, Rayabag taluka, Belagavi District, Karnataka during kharif 2014-15 and 2015-16 and laboratory experiment were conducted in Department of Seed Science and Technology, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad during 2014-15. The results revealed that, retaining all fruits for seed purpose recorded significantly higher seed yield (369 kg/ha) as compared to plucking initial formed 18 fruits of green stage for vegetable purpose and retaining remaining fruits for seed purpose. For seed production of brinjal, plucking initial formed 3 fruits of green stage for vegetable purpose and retaining remaining fruits for seed purpose compared to retaining all fruits for seed purpose was found to be most ideal as it registered on par test weight, number of seeds per fruit, seed yield with better quality parameters and an extra income of Rs. 14,395 per hectare was obtained. Among the foliar spray with insecticides, emamectin benzoate was most effective in suppressing the pest population as lowest mean per cent fruit infestation and seed damage was recorded after its application (15.50 and 12.33 % respectively) followed by flubandamide (16.71 and 13.09 %) and spinosad (18.17 and 14.93 %). Brinjal seeds primed with GA3 50 ppm and PEG @ 1.25 MPa and drying them back to their original moisture content needs to be practiced to obtain higher seed quality. The optimum yield with better quality seed can be obtained from the brinjal cv. Kudachi local when 35 days old seedlings were transplanted with GA3 @ 50 ppm growth regulator spray.

An investigation entitled “Standardization of seed production technologies in lucerne (Medicago sativa L.) Cv. RL-88” was carried out during rabi-summer seasons of 2010-11 and 2011-12 at Indian Grassland and Fodder Research Institute, Southern Regional Research Station, Dharwad and Department of Seed Science and Technology, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad with four field and two laboratory experiments. The results on the cutting management practices revealed that two cut (T3) treatment recorded significantly the highest seed yield (228.93 kg/ha.), seed quality parameters like seed germination (87.50 %), seedling vigour index (1152). Among the different time of sowing treatments, sowing on December 14th registered significantly higher growth, seed yield (222.41 kg/ha.), seed quality like seed germination (87.13 %) and seedling vigour index (1137). Seeds harvested from two cut treatment and 14th December sown crop showed higher seed quality parameters during all the months of ambient storage over other cutting management and time of sowing treatments. The seeds stored in polyethylene bag (700 gauge) were superior over cloth bag throughout the storage period. Among the supplementary pollination techniques, spraying of Jaggery solution (10 %) recorded highest seed setting (61.73 %), seed yield (297.90 kg/ha) and seed quality traits like seed germination (87.59 %), seedling length (12.89 cm) and seedling vigour index (1129) as compared to other techniques. The experiment on seed development and maturation studies revealed that harvesting of pods and seeds on 35 days after anthesis (DAA) produced higher seed quality attributes like seed germination (85.67 %), seedling length (13.86 cm), seedling vigour index (1187). It also indicated that harvesting pods on 35th DAA is the actual physiological maturity stage for obtaining better seed quality in lucerne.
