    The women, contributing about half of the world 's population, has been subjected to discrimination, seggregation and exploitation in the past. Their plight was reinforced by religion and social anmes. The neglect of women was nanifested in almost all walks of life including ca.re, education, employment, food and health and the like. The lack of opportunities given to the women in past to develop their facilities resulted in the low levels of contribution of women in development of society. However, the thinking about women in development had undergone radical change with the spread of education, industrialization and ideas of equality and democracy.

    Socio-Economic Status of Female Agricultural Laborers with Special Reference to Scheduled Caste

    Women who constitute half of the world's population by virtue of an accident of birth, perform two third of the world's work, receive one-tenth of its income and own less than one hundredth of its property. Since the time immemorial, women are largely employed in agriculture and allied enterprise. Of the total population of 684 million nearly 524 million people Jive in villages in India. Women constitute 47.5 per cent of the rural population. About 75 per cent of rural women belong to the families of small and marginal farmers. A majority of the landless women are from scheduled caste and scheduled tribes. Two-third of them are illiterate and most of the farm manual Labour is provided by them. They daily put in 14-18 hours of productive manual labour.

    Drugs ere substances that cause changes in body function and are found in Wide variety of forms and represent even wider Variety of uses. These are found in nature, in our foods and in chemical composition. Many drugs are consumed without any perceptible effects while others take a devastating toll, especially when abused some are Socially acceptable and beneficial, some are not. They are sold by prescription, over the counter without Medical advice in legalized establishment ts and through illegal markets on the streets.

    Role of Women in Vegetable Cultivation

    Historians believe that it was women, who first started cultivation of crop plants, and initiated the art and science of !arming. Women started gathering seeds from native flora, and cultivated those of interest from the point of view of food, fodder, fiber and fuel, around their huntsmen, when their men folk went in woods for bunting. Even today, women are traditionally known for their seed selection ability {Swaminathan, 1985). Aronotf and Crano (1975) on the basis of the study o! 862 societies revealed that the world wide percentage of food production contributed by women is 43.88 with a range of 32.24 to 50.73 over specific culture areas. In the agricultural sector women play an important role by contributing about 40 per cent of the labour force and their relative importance increases with domination of agricultural economy.

But ironically enough, our population has been steadily on the increasing. Today, it has crossed the 80 Crore mark, according to the latest Census. On the one hand. there has been greater production of food grains and in the factories, but these benefits of Greater production have bee:n neutrals by the population fallout.
