Investigations on hybrid vigour in bhindi ( Abelmosohus esculentus L. Monech)
(Division of Agricultural Botany, Agricultural college & research institute , Vellayani Trivandrum, 1965) Mohamad Isaack, A; KAU; Kumara Pillai, P
This investigations was carried out in the Agricultural botany division of the Agricultural college and research institute, Vellayani during the year 1964-65 (october, 1964 to June 1965). Seeds of four varieties of bhindi vis. local white pusa red pusa sowani and kilichundan obtained from the agricultural college farm were used and sown in the botanic garden of the college on 13.10.1964. A large number of flowers in each variety were selfed to have the parental seeds for the next season. Crossing between varieties in all possible combinations was also undertaken to get F1 seeds for the investigation .

Studies on the effect of growth regulators on germination, growth and oil content in Sesame (Sesamum indicum-L)
(Division of Agricultural Botany, Agricultural College & Research Institute, Vellayani, 1963) Santha Kumari, S; KAU; Kumara Pillai, P
An experiment was conducted at the Agricultural College and Research Institute, Vellayani during 1962-63, to study the effect of three growth regulators NAA, GA and 2, 4-D on germination, growth and oil content of Sesamum indicum. NAA, GA and 2, 4-D at three different levels 0, 15, 30; 0, 25, 50; and 0, 2, 5 ppm. respectively, were tried for the present study . The three different stages of application were seed, seedling and at the time of flowering . The experiment was conducted as pot-culture in randomised block design with 5 replications and 27 treatment in factorial combinations. Observations on germination percentage, height of plants, number of branches and nodes, fresh weight of stem, number of flowers and fruits, percentage of fruit setting, yield and oil contents of seeds were recorded and the data statistically analysed.

Studies on the effect of gibberellic acid on the growth and yield in rice (Oryza sativa, L)
(Division of Agricultural Botany, Agricultural College & Research Institute, Vellayani, 1964) Sathya Das, E; KAU; Kumara Pillai, P
The present investigation is undertaken to study the effects of gibberellic acid on the cereal, rice (Oryza sativa. L). The hormone was used at concentrations of 25,50,75, 100 and 125 ppm., as spray application on the 21 days old seedlings. Three stages of applications namely spraying once in a week , once in two weeks and once in three weeks were tried. A pot culture experiment was conducted adopting a randomised block design. The effect of gibberellic acid on the height of plants, number of tillers, time of flowering, fresh and dry weight of stem, length of the ear heads, number of leaves , dry weight of the roots and the yield were studied. Of these only height of the plants was influenced significantly by the treatments. Marked shoot elongation was observed in the gibberellic acid treated plants. The maximum response was at the level of 100 ppm. Weekly spraying is better than spraying once in two weeks and once in three weeks.

Studies on the effect of growth regulators on sex expressions and sex ratio in Bitter gourd (Momordica charantia L.)
(Division of Agricultural Botany, Agricultural College and Research Institute, Vellayani, 1964) Raveendran, P S; KAU; Kumara Pillai, P
An experiment was conducted to study the effect of four growth regulators in Momordica charantia with special reference to sex expression and sex ratio. The four growth regulators tried were TIBA (300, 400, 500 and 600 ppm), NAA (200, 300, 400 and 500 ppm) and 2, 4-D (4, 6, 8 and 10 ppm). The treatment was given one week after germination . The experiment was conducted as pot culture in randomised block design with four replications and eighteen treatments. Observations on the height of the main stem and of the plant including branches, number of nodes and branches in the main stem, fresh weight of plants, leaf deformities, number of male and female flowers and fruits , weight of the fruits and number of seeds per fruit were recorded and the data collected were statistically analysed. The sex ratio was determined by comparing the number of male and female flowers produced in various traetments. The percentage of fruit set was also studied. The time of flowering and the variation in the size of the male flower were also noticed in the course of the study.

Comparative study on X4 mutants of cowpea (Vigna sinensis L. Savi.) with reference to quantitative characters
(Division of Agricultural Botany, Agricultural College & Research Institute, Vellayani, 1966) Natarajan, E N; KAU; Kumara Pillai, P
This thesis embodies the results of an investigation carried out in the Division of Agricultural Botany of the Agricultural College and Research Institute, Vellayani during the year 1965-66 to study the behaviour of X4 mutants of cowpea (Vigna ainensis L. Savi) with reference to certain quantitative economic characters. Eight mutant types selected from X3, along with the orginal (African) variety as control were raised in plots which were statistically laid out and replicated. The X4 mutants were compared among themselves as well as with the control with a view to isolate the economic types possessing desirable quantitative characters.
