    “RICHNESS AND DISTRIBUTION OF COMMERCIALLY IMPORTANT FINFISHES AND SHELLFISHES OFF VERAVAL COAST ON GIS PLATFORM”

    The present study was conducted to understand promising fishing grounds of Commercially important Finfishes and Shellfishes using GIS mapping method. The precise data in the form of geographical coordinates of fishing and allied information on the time of fishing, depth of the fishing area, catch details, etc. in a structured schedule were collected from the identified multiday trawlers operated along Veraval coast of Gujarat. Information was then mapped on GIS platform to get the promising fishing grounds and the spatio-temporal distribution of different groups of fishes. The favourable fishing grounds for Croakers and Threadfin breams with highest CPUE were in areas of Veraval-Mangrol, Dev-bhoomi Dwarka and Porbandar whereas lowest aggregation was seen in areas off Vanakbara, Diu and Mumbai at the depth range of 50 – 150 m in the post monsoon and winter months. These fishes during the premonsoon months moved towards Mumbai - Ratnagiri and less CPUE was observed in areas of Veraval and Diu. The favorable fishing ground was along the southern Saurashtra coast i.e., below 19˚48' N having deeper waters (> 50 m), which resulted in relatively higher CPUE in all the seasons. Unicorn Leather jacket was abundant in waters of Saurashtra during the post monsoon and winter months where as in pre monsoon season the CPUE was high in Maharashtra waters. The favorable fishing grounds for Cephalopods were located along the south off Girsomnath district and off Daman coast at a depth range upto 30 m , which resulted in moderate to high CPUE in all the seasons. A seasonal variation in the area of distribution of the fishes was also observed.

    PREPARATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF FUNCTIONAL OATS COOKIES FORTIFIED WITH FISH PROTEIN CONCENTRATE AND PLANT EXTRACTS 2956

    Recently, the demand for foods and beverages, which improves health or proves beneficial, has been intensified. Baked cookies can act as an important vehicle carrying bioactive compounds in the field of functional foods. The use of biologically active compounds from plants as functional ingredients in food is gaining interest. Two different experiments were conducted using oats cookies prepared with different percentage of fish protein concentrate (2%, 4%, 6%, 8% and 10%) and plant extracts, orange peel (O) and cactus fruit extract (C). The aim was to find out the best concentration of FPC and effect of bioactive phyto-chemical of plant extract for enhanced shelf life and keeping quality at room temperature. Oats cookies prepared with 2 % FPC had the highest sensory score for overall acceptability. Oats cookies were prepared with 2 % FPC and different percentage of plant extracts. Treatments included, C (control, without plant extract), C1 (cactus fruit extract 1%), C2 (cactus fruit extract 2%), C3 (cactus fruit extract 3%), C10 (cactus fruit extract 10%), O1 (Orange peel extract 1%), O2 (Orange peel extract 2%), O3 (Orange peel extract 3%) and O10 (Orange peel extract 10%). The proximate composition (protein, fat, moisture, Ash), instrumental analysis (texture, color and spread ratio), biochemical (pH, TMA, TVBN ii and TBA), microbiological (TPC, yeast and mold count) and sensory test were done to access the quality of cookies at 15 days interval during 90 days at room temperature. Cookies fortified with 10% cactus fruit extract performed best, followed by cookies fortified with 10 % orange peel extract. Based on the results, it is concluded that the product had good shelf life of 3-4 months at room temperature with high acceptability.

    “OCEANOGRAPHIC CONDITIONS AND THEIR INFLUENCE ON MARINE PHYTOPLANKTON ASSEMBLAGE ALONG MARINE NATIONAL PARK & SANCTUARY, GULF OF KUTCH, GUJARAT” 2333

    Studies on the characteristics of the marine environment are essential in fisheries research, as the conditions in the sea play a key role in the accessibility of fishery resources. The present investigation was carried out on biological diversity of phytoplankton in the coastal water of Marine National Park, Gulf of Kutch, Gujarat during the period from August 2015 to February 2017. Fortnightly water samples were collected from Poshitra Island (Location – 1) and Narara Island (Location-2). A total 196 species belonging to 43 families and 39 orders were recorded during the study period. Five major classes of marine phytoplankton were identified viz., Diatoms, Dinoflagellates, Blue-green algae, Brown algae and Green algae. The identified species consisted of diatoms (81.63%), dianoflagellates (13.78%), blue green algae (3.60%), brown algae (1.02%) and green algae (0.51%). Diatoms were the most dominant group among the phytoplankton community with 160 species followed by dianoflagellates (27 Species) and blue green algae (6 Species). Dinoflagellates are the second largest group of phytoplankton after the diatoms, but the abundance of dinoflagellates are very less when compared to diatom population during the entire period of investigation. The density of phytoplankton, at Poshitra Island ranged from 3,78,395 to 5,42,180 cells L-1, whereas at Narara Island it ranged from 4,22,528 to 8,65,665 cells L-1. The density of phytoplankton species was high in the post-monsoon season and proved the number of species (richness) more in the post-monsoon season compared to pre-monsoon and monsoon. There was significant difference in the density of marine phytoplankton in different fortnights, months and seasons due to the changing abiotic parameters. The correlation between the density of phytoplankton with the environmental variables viz., dissolved oxygen and pH were significantly positive whereas it was inversely correlated with the temperature.
