Abstract: Brucellosis is an emerging anthropozoonosis having serious public health implications in developing nations. Surveys were conducted on dairies, dairy workers and their families for exploring zoonotic link between human and animals. In the present study, 212 bovine serum samples (including 162 cattle and 50 buffalo samples) along with 150 human serum samples (consisting of 50 samples of dairy owners and their families and 100 samples of P.U.O. cases) belonging to different localities of Bikaner were screened using RBPT and STAT. In bovines, an overall prevalence of 5.66 per cent and 6.60 was found using RBPT and STAT, respectively. Further, 6 per cent human cases studied were positive in both RBPT and STAT (10% dairy owners and 4 % P.U.O. cases). MRT revealed 3.26 per cent (5 samples) positivity out of 153 (113 cattle and 40 buffalo) bovine milk samples tested. On tracing back the source of infection amongst 9 human positive reactors, 4 were having history of direct exposure to their animals (also found positive for brucellosis) while 3 had history of consuming raw milk of their animals found infected with brucellosis indicating raw milk to be the probable cause of contacting the infection. One livestock assistant was also found positive for brucellosis. Overall, the occupational and zoonotic risks involved with brucellosis need immediate corrective measures.
