Abstract: One hundred eighty F3 families of sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) were screened phenotypically for Alternaria blight disease caused by Alternaria sesami, the families which show segregation with respect to Alternaria disease are selected for inheritance study and are also evaluated to find out the extent of genetic variability for yield and yield attributing characters by using augmented design during kharif season of 2009 at College of Agriculture, Raichur. Among 180 F3 families screened phenotypically for Alternaria blight disease, thirteen families were shown segregation in straight cross (SC-F2-19, SC-F2-32, SC-F2-53, SC-F2-58, SC-F2-59, SC-F2-55, SC-F2- 82, SC-F2-83, SC-F2-142, SC-F2-146, SC-F2-171, SC-F2-184, SC-F2-197) and nine families in reciprocal cross (RC-F2-41, RC-F2-44, RC-F2-45, RC-F2-50, RC-F2-51, RC-F2-60, RC-F2-63, RC-F2-73, RC-F2-76) with respect to Alternaria disease. F3 bulk segregant analysis clearly indicated that the resistance was in the control of a single dominant gene because the susceptible v/s resistant could segregate as 3:1. OPA-06 primer was selected for the bulk segregant analysis. The result indicates RAPD marker of 10 kb band was found association between resistance and OPA-06 primer. Analysis of variance revealed highly significant differences among the families with respect to different characters studied; the characters such as no. of pods, no. of branches, no. of seeds per pod and first pod height has shown greatest variability. High heritability accompanied by higher genetic advance as per cent mean for the characters like no. of pods , seed yield, no. of branches and distance from ground to first pod. Positive and highly significant correlation was observed between plant height and no. of pods, no. of branches and no. of seeds per pod; no. of pods with no. of seeds per pod; pod length with first pod height. Path analysis revealed that no. of pod, a single major character which exhibited highest positive direct effect on seed yield.
