Abstract: The substituted chalcones were synthesized through Claisen-Schmidt condensation by reacting substituted benzaldehyde and substituted acetophenone using 40% potassium hydroxide solution and ethanol. Further derivatives of chalcones viz. pyrazole and isoxazole were synthesized by using reagents hydrazine hydrate and hydroxylamine hydrochloride respectively. All the synthesized compounds were characterized by 1H NMR,1H NMR-D2O, 13C NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy. The synthesized compounds were evaluated for their antimicrobial activity against two bacterial strains Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Pseudomonas oryzihabitans using disc plate method and Ciprofloxacin as standard drug. It was found that compound 1-(2-methoxyphenyl)-3-phenylprop-2-en-1-one and 1-(4- chlorophenyl)-3-phenylprop-2-en-1-one showed potent activity against both the bacterial strains.
