Abstract: Electricity generation from solar energy does not produce pollutants and also fuelling is not required. As a result, solar energy is considered to be the favourable source of energy. Generation of electricity from solar photo voltaic (PV) system is a function of the efficiency of the PV module and several factors influence module efficiency. Temperature among the various factors affecting the efficiency of PV module, is the major parameter influencing the PV module efficiency and power output. With the exposure of PV module to sunlight, the amount of energy from the sun converted to useful energy is about 31 %, a greater percentage is changed to heat energy, which tends to make the temperature of the module to rise and this leads to a reduction in electricity produced by the module. This energy causes an increase in the temperature of module and is wasted as heat which ultimately damages the material used to fabricate the PV module and hence reduces the cell life span as well as its conversion efficiency. Looking into this, an experiment was conducted in the College of Agricultural Engineering and Technology, OUAT, Bhubaneswar, Odisha from December 2018 to May 2019 in order to know the rise of temperature of modules both in winter and summer seasons in a clear day and decrease in its efficiency in warm and humid climate of Odisha. To enhance the efficiency and power output from the module, the cooling arrangements such as air cooling, water cooling and combined air and water cooling were incorporated and compared its effectiveness without any cooling device. The enhancement in the efficiency of the module was studied by using 0.5 hp solar DC pump to lift the water to a head of 17 meter. From the experiments, it was found that the efficiencies of solar module were increased in the range of 8-11 %, 12-15% and 16-20% in air, water and combined air and water cooling respectively compared to without cooling in a clear day. The discharge of solar pump was increased by 35, 60 and 80 lit/h in air, water and combined air and water respectively compared to without cooling and the cost of generation of unit electricity from only solar photovoltaic module with and without cooling of modules is respectively Rs. 4.00 and Rs.5.00 per kWh. The cost of generation of unit electricity from solar photo voltaic water pumping system with and without cooling of modules is respectively Rs. 8.00 and Rs.9.00 per kWh. The hourly cost of operation of only solar photovoltaic module and solar photovoltaic water pumping system was found to be very reasonable i.e. Rs. 2.00 and Rs.3.50 respectively which clearly indicated that percentage decrease in cost of unit electricity from SPV module only and solar photo voltaic water pumping system with cooling arrangement against without any cooling is respectively 20 and 11 %. The increase in efficiency of module by about 20 % as against without cooling technique is due to multiple cooling techniques which may be suggested for use in solar PV system for getting better output from it.
