Abstract: Tractor operated axial flow paddy threshers have become popular in Odisha in last few years. Though these machines have reduced the time of threshing to a considerable level, safety and comfort of operators still remains a problem. In conventional threshers, a foldable platform is provided in the axial flow paddy thresher on which a person has to stand and feed the crop into the feeding chute of the thresher. Two other persons manually supply the crop to the man standing on the platform. In this method of feeding, the person standing on the platform is exposed to high level of whole body vibration (4-5 m/s2) as against the permissible level of vibration (1.15m/s2), which causes serious health hazards. To overcome these difficulties, a mechanical feeding system has been developed. The performance evaluation of thresher with the feeding system attached to it was carried out with three levels of feed rates (19.78 q/ h, 30.13 q/h and 33.95 q/h) and three levels of conveyer speed (0.55 m/s, 0.66 m/s and 0.83 m/s) with three replications. It was observed that capacity increased significantly with increase in feed rate from 19.78 q/h to 33.95 q/h. However, at feed rate of 33.95 q/h, higher percentage of un-threshed grain (2.36%), broken grains (2.50%) and total losses (5.24%) was observed which was unacceptable. It was also observed that, capacity increased up to 0.83 m/s conveyer speed. At this speed the un-threshed grain, broken grains and total losses were found to be under permissible level as prescribed in BIS : 11691- 1986 test code. Therefore, the performance of the thresher with the new feeding system attached to it was found to be better at feed rate of 30.13 q/h and conveyer speed of 0.83 m/s. At this combination the output capacity, threshing efficiency, broken grain percentage and total losses were found to be 16.62 q/h, 99.01%, 1.94% and 2.92% respectively. With the mechanical feeding system fitted to the axial flow paddy thresher, the threshing capacity increased by 63.26% over existing thresher. There was cost saving of 40.96% and labour saving of 50% over earlier practice. In addition to this, the problem of transmission of vibration to worker was completely eliminated.
