Abstract: ABSTRACT The present investigation was carried out to obtain information on extent of heterosis. combining ability for yield and its components and to evaluate the hybrids for Fusarium wilt resistance in pigeonpea. Evaluation of backcross generation (BC2F1‟s) for per cent male sterility was also carried out during 2011-12 at ARS, Gulbarga. Six CGMS lines were crossed with 13 testers in line x tester fashion during 2010 kharif to obtain 78 Straight F1‟s. These hybrids along with their parents were evaluated in Lattice Design with two replications during Kharif, 2011 using Maruti as check. The same hybrids were screened for resistance against Fusarium wilt and six BC2F1‟s evaluated for their per cent male sterility. On the basis of per se performance, hybrid ICPA-2098 x M-3(GRG-2009) had superior performance for number of pods per plant and for seed yield per plant, ICPA-2098 x Asha for seed yield per hectare and GT-308A x TS-3R for hundred seed weight and these hybrids registered highest significant heterosis over commercial variety. Based on GCA effects, parents ICPA-2098, GT-625A, TAT-9903, TS-3R and ICPL-87 were good general combiners for developing early maturing hybrids. ICPA-2098, ICPA-2092, TS-3 and LRG-41 for number of pods per plant. The parents, GT-625A and ICPA-2098 (females) and M-3(GRG-2009) and LRG-41 (males) for seed yield per plant. ICPA-2048-4, GT-307A (females) and M-3(GRG-2009) and Asha (males) for seed yield per hectare. ICPA-2098, GT-625A, M-3 (GRG-2009) and LRG-41 for 100 seed weight. The best hybrids on the basis of SCA effects, ICPA-2098 x M-3 (GRG-2009) for number of pods per plant and seed yield per plant, ICPA-2098 x Asha for seed yield per hectare and GT-308A x TS-3R for 100 seed weight. The ratio of variance components due to GCA to SCA suggested the preponderance of non additive gene action for all characters studied.100 per cent sterility was observed in two backcrosses viz., (GT-288 x TS-3R) x TS-3R and (ICPA-2078 x WRP-1) x WRP-1. Out of 78 hybrids screened for Fusarium wilt resistance, 12 of them were found to be resistant and 42 hybrids showed moderate resistant reaction and 24 hybrids showed susceptible reaction to wilt.
