Abstract: A field experiment entitled “Efficacy of new post emergence herbicides in rabi maize” was conducted on clay soils at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Lam, Guntur, AP during rabi 2017-18 by adopting Randomized Block Design with eight treatments replicated thrice. The treatments consisted of T1: Tembotrione @ 100 g a.i ha-1 (PoE) at 20 DAS; T2: Topramezone @ 25g a.i ha-1 ha (PoE) at 20 DAS; T3: Halosulfuron @ 67.5g a.i. ha-1 (PoE) at 20 DAS; T4: Tolpyralate @125ml ha-1 (PoE) at 20 DAS; T5: Nicosulfuron @ 700ml ha-1 (PoE) at 20 DAS; T6: Two hand weedings at 20 and 40 DAS; T7: weedy check; ; T8: Weed free. The important weed species observed in the experimental field consisted of grasses viz., Cynodon dactylon, Panicum repens, Echinochloa colona (L.), Dinebra retroflexa (L.), one sedges viz., Cyperus rotundus and nine broad leaved weed species viz., Abutilon indicum (L.), Commelina benghalensis (L.),. Trianthema portulacastrum, Cleome viscosa, Chorchorus trilocularis, Digera arvensis, Phyllanthus madaraspatanense, Chrozophora rottleri, Celosia argentea. All the weed management treatments recorded significantly lower density of weeds when compared to weedy check. The lower weed density, weed dry matter and higher WCE was observed with post emergence application of tembotrione @ 100 g a.i/ha (PoE) at 20 DAS and hand weeding at 20 and 40 DAS (T1 and T6). Higher weed density, weed drymatter and low WCE was observed with post emergence application of halosulfuron @ 67.5g a.i./ha (PoE) at 20 DAS(T3). The plant height, drymatter production of maize was not affected by application of any of the herbicides upto 50 DAS and recorded zero values of phytotoxicity score after 14 DAA. Plants were lean and lanky in weedy check with less crop drymatter production at all the stages of crop growth and also with treatments receiving post emergence application of halosulfuron @ 67.5g a.i./ha (PoE) at 20 DAS due to higher weed competition. Higher plant drymatter accumulation was recorded with tembotrione @ 100 g a.i ha-1 (PoE) at 20 DAS (T1). The yield attributing characters viz., kernel yield, number of kernel rows per cob, number of kernels per row were significantly influenced by weed management treatments. All these parameters were recorded with tembotrione @ 100 g a.i ha-1, topramezone @ 25 g a.i ha-1, nicosulfuron @ 700 ml ha-1 (PoE) at 20 DAS (T5) were on par with each other and with hand weeded check and significantly superior to weedy check. Further, they did not show any detrimental effect on soil fungal and bacterial population at 35, 50 DAS and at harvest stage. The maximum benefit cost ratio was obtained with post emergence application of tembotrione @ 100 g a.i ha-1 (PoE) at 20 DAS (T1) which was followed by topramezone @ 25 g a.i ha-1 (PoE) and nicosulfuron @ 700 ml ha-1 at 20 DAS (T2). Thus tembotrione, topramezone and nicosulfuron can be the effective and economical post emergence herbicides as an alternative to hand weeding for the control of broad spectrum of weeds in rabi maize in the black clay soils of Krishna zone.
