Abstract: A field experiment was conducted at the "Instructional farm of Department of Agronomy, CoUege of Agriculture, Junagadh Agricultural University, Junagadh (Gujarat). During kharif season in the year 2004 with objects to study the effects of various plants growth regulators on growth, flowering, sex expression and yield in sponge gourd Cv. 'Pusa Chikni'. The experiment was incorporated in Randomized Block Design with three replication and fourteen treatments viz, three concentrations each of GAs (20, 30 and 40 ppm), Ethrel (200, 30 3 and 400 ppm), CCC (200, 300 and 400 ppm), 2, 4-D (4, 6 and 8 ppm) and two control (i.e. water spray and without water spray). Two sprays of plant growth regulators were done at 2"^ and 4«h leaf stages. Abstract The results of experiment revealed that growth characters such as length of main vine (3.47 m) and node number at which first female flower appears (17.63) were observed minimum, whereas number of branches (16.42/vine) and node number at which first male flower appears (16.25) were observed maximum in Ethrel 300 ppm treatment. While, GAs 40 ppm recorded maximum length of main vine (3.94 m) As regard to flowering, minimum days were taken to first female flower (59.12 days) and male flower (48.41 days) appearance in Ethrel 300 ppm. While, maximum days were taken to first male flower appearance (56.50 days) in Ethrel 300- ppm treatment. The lowest number of male flowers (230.0) was observed in Ethrel 300 ppm treatment where as higher number of male flowers (447.5) was in OAs 40 ppm. The highest number of female flowers (44.0) and lowest male: female sex ratio (1:5.26) was observed in Ethrel 300 ppm treatment. The yield characters such as fruit length (25.95 cm) and diameter (16.50 cm) were observed maximum in treatment Ethrel 300 ppm. On other hand the number of fruits (in regards to fruit set, harvested and fruit yield kg/vine), Ethrel 300 ppm produced highest number of fruits (36.82, 28.58, 4.57 respectively). Similarly, maximum fruit yield 23.90 t/ha was also observed in Ethrel 300 ppm. The highest net return (Rs. 94437.50/ha) and CBR (1: 4.77) were observed in Ethrel 300 ppm It is concluded that application of Ethrel 300 ppm has significantly reduced the length of main vine and increased the number of branches and reduced the number of nodes and days taken to first female flower appearance. Whereas it increased the node number to first male flower appearance. 11 J Abstract decreased the number of male flowers, increased number of female flowers, lowered male: female sex ratio, enhanced fruit length, fruit diameter and number of fruits per vine, resulting highest fruit yield per vine and per ha. Similarly, with economic point of view Ethrel 300 ppm also gave highest net return and CBR.
