Abstract: Tomato is one of the important vegetable crops belonging to the family Solanaceae along with Potato, Pepper and Brinjal grown throughout India. The tomato is one of the important vegetable crops in many countries. It is the most important vegetable crop, commercially grown in India. India is one of the leading tomato producing countries. xi China is world leader in production (31%), followed by India (9.7%). The area under cultivation and production in India for the year 2015-16 is 7.74 lakh hectars and 18.73 lakh tonnes respectively. Research study reveals that the area and production of tomato is increasing in most of the states. For study purpose the data related to monthly average prices and arrivals of tomato were collected for major markets of Maharashtra viz. Pune, Aurangabad, Nagpur and Nashik for the period 2007 to 2016. Moving average method was used to estimate seasonal variations and Residual Method for cyclical variations. The econometric tools like ADF test, Johansen’s Multiple Co-integration test, Pair-wise Granger Causality Test, ARCH-GARCH and Vector Error Correction models were also used. The prices of tomato were higher during the months of June to July in selected markets i.e. Pune, Aurangabad, Nagpur and Nashik. The higher prices were recorded during the year 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2016. The peak period of arrivals of tomato in the selected markets was August to October. The higher arrivals were recorded during the years 2007, 2011 and 2012. The price series of tomato in all selected markets were stationary at level with lag 1. The selected tomato markets having long run equilibrium relationship for the prices of tomato and there exists co-integration among them as indicated by the results of Johansen’s Multiple Co-integration Test. There was bi-directional causality in tomato prices between Nashik and Nagpur market. The prices of Nagpur and Pune market exhibited unidirectional causality and affects prices of Pune and Nashik respectively. Aurangabad market also exhibited unidirectional causality and affected the prices Nashik market. The volatility shocks in the prices of tomato were quite persistent in the selected markets except Pune market, it was less volatile in tomato prices as compared to other markets. The estimates of Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) revealed that Aurangabad and Nagpur markets attain short run equilibrium rapidly. xii In order to minimize the price risk and to protect price security of farming community for tomato crop of Maharashtra state which is very volatile commodity in terms of market prices, it is suggested that the long term procurement policy should be adopted to maintain price stability throughout the year by declaring the MSP and procurement by Nodal agencies at least for major markets of the state.
Description: The present study is undertaken to study the seasonal and cyclical variations in prices and arrivals of Tomato, stationarity and volatility in Prices of Tomato. To assess the co-integration among selected markets and co-movement of price signals between selected markets.
Subject: Agricultural Economics
Theme: In the present study a serious attempt has been made to study the Price analysis of Tomato for major markets of Maharashtra.
Research Problem: Present study deals with the price analysis of tomato. In the present study the researcher has tried to examine the seasonal and cyclical indices of tomato prices and arrivals as well as stationarity and volatility in prices of tomato. It deals with the study of co-integration among selected markets, co-movement of price signals between selected markets. The researcher also tried to examine the short-run and long run equilibrium behavior of tomato prices.
