Abstract: The investigation was carried out as physiological basis for heterosis in ridge gourd at Department of Crop Improvement and Biotechnology, K. R. C. College of Horticulture, Arabhavi, during 2012-2014. Eighteen genotypes were evaluated for genetic variability. Diversity was observed for most of characters among genotypes. Fruit yield had positive and highly significant association with number of fruits per vine, absolute growth rate of leaf, crop growth rate of leaf, fruit diameter and fruit length. Path-coefficient analysis revealed that vine length had the highest positive direct effect on fruit yield both at genotypic and phenotypic levels and most of the fruit related traits contributed to fruit yield. Ten parents selected based on per se performance and were crossed in Line x Tester design to derive 24 hybrids. Heterosis, GCA and SCA was estimated. Analysis of variance revealed large variation for all the character among parents as well as in hybrids. Comprehensive assessment of parents by considering gca effects has resulted into identification of parents viz., Arabhavi local, Kolar local, Arka Sumeet and Mudigere local as good combiner for yield and yield contributing characters. The crosses viz., Arabhavi Local x Gadag Local, Kolar Local x Arka Sujata, Arka Sumeet x Arka Sujata and Mudigere Local x Arka Sujata were good specific combiners for yield and yield related traits which can be used in future breeding programme. Comprehensive assessment of crosses by considering heterosis values revealed that, out of twenty four crosses, three were average heterotic (Arabhavi Local x Gadag Local, Kolar Local x Arka Sujata and Arka Sumeet x Arka Sujata) and three were low heterotic (Dalasanur Local x Ghataprabha Local, Dalasanur Local x Jaipur Long and Deepthi x Arka Sujata). The information generated from the study indicated that heterosis breeding or recurrent selection by intermating the high GCA lines for improvement of yield.
