Abstract: Among **• miliots Sorghum occupies the prenter position because of the sise of the crop axe* under cultivation^ end the tcononic lieportanee of its grain which &fer mainly consumed by working class** in Ibe wrtl areas a* their staple food, Tho area under sorghum crop la India is about lot lakh hectare* and total production is about 3*99 Million n. tonnee of grains* Maharashtra is one of Hi* important sorghum growing stste, contributing to about one third of the total ores under this ctop i.e. 61 la)* hectares* The production is about 2.86 million a, tonnes of grains* being mainly grown in both, jg&fiLI end rafe| seasons. It is well known that some of the Most important crop disease causing organism* are associated with the seeds. Ev ry year seed brone«diseas*s« J&b.* bunt end smut of wheat ana nmut of Barely, sorghura and oat are known to caves onoanous loss*** Among the seed-bone diseases of millets, grain smut of sorghum ( sohacelotheca eorahi (Link) Clin two ) is Hie most outstanding one as it causes an annual loss of two Billion dollars in Kansas stats (U.S.A. ) alone ( Meiefters, 1925 ). other important disease* «**si*g< w^panitisma associated with seeds ere ergot, downy mildew, leaf spotting fungi ouch at tffl, ffnr^TWlBtf*rtWT *»*# colletotricburo ap.« and sons other organisms like ap## luaarium sp.# Phoroa a^9 and Chestorn Jam *?• which MB/SuKKKBSSJSmm t encounter enessous losses. Vasudeva and lycngex (1930) at*te2 that losses due to ail seed home diseases of fungi on cereal crops alone would amount to mall over a million tonnes per year or in other words* w&m than a ^uerter of the estimated annual deficit of the- cereal grains produced in India, One of the principle sheens of dlsiwwaiisation of plant pathogens which cause heavy losses is fctrough areas• Humorous si lero*#r©*nisfBS# pathogenic ana ©apropshytic have baen found to fee associate with the grains of sorghum which cause seed deterioration and rot under field conditions, such grains when used a® seeds, result into poor crop stand* Some ae©d*feoroe micros r-anisrae are know to causa plant disease* (vis., seed rot^ saediino. blight etc.) ana others play a major role in deterioration of stored seeds, still others cause diseases or poisoning of ssaii and animals that Hindis or consume the seeds* Disease** condition of reeds is brought about by Which several kinds of micro-orrjaniiiras^msy be fungi, bacteria, viruses and nanatoaes of which fungi occupy the taost Important place* seed-born* micro-organ igmo can be carried on the surface of the seed or esfl&edded in the seed tissue at various depths* titan seeds are investigated for tlie pmmnm of »icro*or®eniet»a# the methods of investigation should he adopted for the purpose, Although pcopegui** of plant pathogen* normally constitute only a snail fraction of tha seeds total microflora, they can toe preferentially detected 3 by a suitable choice of hc?<& testing method®. so far*, not much work ha© bean done in India on ©e^d bornc pathogens of sorghum, it vae bought therefor© worthvrfiilc to utrertake the present investigation in order to esnduet a survey of g^ad-borne fungi of aotse MAcctad vcrictit-s of sexghun to ascertain their effect on serdlincj emergence and growth anti to fiad out a uu it able control for tfre same* Stoa result* of the or aent invtstig&» tion haw been presented in the aucc*e£ing pages.
