Abstract: One hundred and thirty one germplasm collections of sesame were evaluated in RBD with two replications during kharif 2014 at AICRP on Sesame and Niger, MARS, UAS, Dharwad to determine the nature and magnitude of variability, character association and diversity, knowledge of which is helpful in selecting the parents for hybridization programme. ANOVA revealed the prevalence of highly significant differences among the genotypes for all characters. PCV and GCV estimates were high for seed yield/plant, number of capsules/plant, number of capsules on the main stem and number seeds/capsules. Heritability in broad sense and GAM were high for seed yield/plant, number of capsules on main stem, number of capsules/plant, plant height and number of seeds/capsule. All yield component traits exhibited positive significant association with seed yield/plant except days to maturity and days to 50% flowering. Path coefficient analysis revealed plant height, capsule breadth and number of capsules/plant exhibited high direct effect with seed yield/plant signifying their importance in selection. Using Mahalanobis D2 statistic, 131 genotypes were grouped into 10 clusters and highest diversity was observed between cluster IV and X. The geographic diversity of genotypes did not match with genetic diversity. 1000 seed weight, oil content and seed yield/plant were the major contributors towards divergence. Based on the study DS-20, KALIKA, DS-28, IC-143808 and DS-21 are some of the genotypes identified for high yield and yield contributing traits are to be considered for initiating hybridization programme for genetic improvement of sesame.
