Abstract: A study was undertaken to assess the combining ability, heterosis and resistance to Alternaria blight using new restorer lines derived from interspecific derivative TX16R through induced mutagenesis and hybridization. The material consisted of three cytoplasmic male sterile (CMS) and 14 new restorer lines crossed in Line x Tester design during summer 2014.A total of 17 parents and 42 hybrids along with three check hybrids were evaluated in randomized block design with two replications at MARS, Dharwad during late kharif 2014. Of all 14 new restorer lines tested, eight restorer lines viz., DSR-83, DSR-89, DSR-90, DSR-76, DSR-112, DSR-108, DSR-72 and DSR-70 restored the complete fertility on CMS-234A, six restorer lines viz., DSR-83, DSR-93, DSR-121, DSR-108, DSR-72 and DSR-115 restored the complete fertility on CMS-853A and five restorers viz., DSR-89,DSR-125,DSR-76, DSR-108 and DSR-70 restored complete fertility on CMS-1030A. Among these DSR-90 and DSR-93 were identified as good general combiners for both seed yield and Alternaria disease resistance with less AUDPC (912.03 & 933.91) at 75 DAS and thus, these new inbreds could be utilized further in heterosis breeding. Most of the fertile experimental hybrids recorded positive heterosis over checks for seed yield per ha, with highest standard heterosis for seed yield (127.29%) recorded in CMS-853A x DSR-72 followed by CMS-853A x DSR-115 (127.19%), CMS-234A x DSR-90 (126.04%) and CMS-234A x DSR-89 (110.25%).SCA variances were larger for all characters indicating predominance of non-additive gene action in inheritance of traits studied.The hybrid CMS-853A x DSR-72 recorded significantly higher seed yield (2064) kg/ha compared to three commercial checks viz., SB-275 (908.18) kg/ha, KBSH-53 (1066) kg/ha and DSFH-3 (1323) kg/ha and also it was resistant to Alternaria leaf blight disease.
