Abstract: A field experiment was conducted at Forage Research Project Farm, Gujarat Agricultural University, Anand Campus, Anand to study the effect of nitrogen, phoshporus and seedrates on forage yield and quality of maize varieties during Rabi season of the year 1993-94. Thirty six treatment combinations consisting of three seedrates viz. 40, 60 and 80 kg/ha, Two maize varieties viz., African tall and Gujarat maize-1 , three levels of nitrogen viz,. 80, 140 and 200 kg N/ha and two levels of phosphorus viz. , 0 and 40 kg P2O5 /ha were tried in split plot design with four replications. Maize crop shown with 80 kg seed/ha recorded less stem thickness , higher green forage and dry matter yields . It, also produced higher biomass with better quality as Judged by less fibre contents and highercrude protein yield. Maize variety Gujarat maize-1 was preferred because of it's less stem thickness, more per day green forage production, less fibre and higher crude protein content. Application of 200 kg N/ha significantly enhanced the plant height, number of leaves per plant, stem thickness and leaf : stem ratio which resulted in higher green forage and dry matter yields. It also improved the quality of fodder with respect to increased crude protein content and crude protein yield. Application of phosphorus was not found beneficial. However, 40 kg P2O5/ha produced higher green forage and dry matter yields. It also improved the forage quality as it decreased crude fibre content.
