|Abstract:||The present investigation was undertaken with a view to understand the horticulture performance in area, production and productivities of different horticultural crops for Satara district over the period of 20 years beginning from the year 1985-86 to 2004-05. The study is based on the time-series data on different aspects of horticultural development of Satara district. The data obtained from secondary sources have been analysed to obtain estimates of annual compound growth rates of area, production and productivities of different horticultural crops during different time periods viz; Period I 1985-86 to 1995-96, Period II 1996-97 to 2004 05, Period III 1985-86 to 2004-05 (i.e. overall period). Efforts have been made to understand the nature of infrastructural facilities with regards to storage, packaging and processing etc. for horticultural produce. Efforts made by government agencies during period under study for horticultural development in the district have been studied. The study revealed that land use pattern and share of horticultural crops like fruits, vegetables and flowers in gross cropped area resulted into significant increase to the extent of 1.77, 3.87, and 0.12 per cent, respectively during the period of 20 years. For the overall period, the growth rates area of grapes, mango, pomegranate, other fruits and total fruits worked out to be 5.08, 32.79, 15.68, 20.77 and 17.33 per cent per annum, respectively which were found to be highly significant. Almost similar type of trend was observed for the vegetables like tomato, brinjal, etc. in the district. The growth rates in area of the total condiments and spices have declined at the rate of 3.07 during the Period II and for the overall Period. The magnitude of growth rate of acreage under flowers turned out to 27.58 per cent per annum during period of twenty years. It is evaluated from the study that, during the overall period, the growth rates in area, production and productivity of grapes turned out to be highly significant (5.08, 14.02 and 2.89 per cent per annum, respectively). In the case of banana, productivity increased to the tune of 6.70 per cent per annum. During the same period, production of onion also increased to the tune of 5.78 per cent per annum. On the contrary, the continuous negative growth rates were noticed, in respect of area, production and productivity for condiments and spices like chillies, ginger and turmeric. The development of infrastructural facilities for horticultural produce in Satara district did not prove to be much satisfactory during the period under consideration. There are only 5 cold storage units with storage capacity of around 12,000 MT in the district, for storing a perishable produce before marketing. Government agencies played a vital role in the horticulture development of the district. An ambitious programme namely, 'Employment Guarantee Scheme Linked with Horticulture Development Programme' was launched in 1990-91 in Maharashtra state. Through this, area covered under horticultural crops in Satara district was 6531 hectares upto 2006-07. For the overall development of horticulture in the state, government of India has launched scheme 'National Horticulture Mission' since 2005-06. Through National Horticulture Mission, 400 hectare area of the district is brought under rejuvenation of horticultural crops. The horticultural development in Satara district has witnessed a substantial development since the beginning of the 'eighties'. The remarkable changes were, however, accelerated during the 'nineties'. Besides, there existed great disparities in the development of horticulture in Satara district during the period under consideration.|
