Abstract: An experiment entitled “Impact of supplementation of Azolla pinnata (R.) to silkworm Bombyx mori L. on growth and cocoon parameters” was carried out during 2011-12 at DBT Ericulture laboratory, Department of Agricultural Entomology, UAS, Dharwad. Four concentrations of azolla was prepared (25, 50, 75 and 100%) and mulberry leaves were dipped in the respective concentrations and fed to fourth and fifth instar silkworms once in a day. Mulberry leaves supplemented with Azolla at 50% concentration shown significantly higher mature larval weight, cocoon weight, pupal weight and shell weight (33.15 g, 16.78 g, 13.42 g and 3.13 g) and minimum was in control (28.31 g, 13.27 g, 11.18 g and 2.05g) respectively. In the next experiment the effective concentration of azolla i.e. 50% was supplemented to fifth instar silkworms once in a day, twice in a day and thrice in a day. Silkworms reared by supplementing azolla (50%) twice a day shown comparatively significant and higher results. Leaves supplemented with 50 % azolla concentrations at two feeding/ day were having significantly higher mature larval weight (37.53g), silk gland weight (0.93 g) and cocoon weight (19.16 g) as compared with absolute control (34.96 g, 0.74 g and 17.61 g ) respectively. Use of aqueous extract of azolla at 50 per cent at two feeding/ day has recorded significantly reduced fifth instar larval duration (167.75 h) maximum ERR of 97.16 per cent and recorded higher digestability (46.68%) with higher cocoon yield (169.70 g/ 100 worms), silk filament length (855.5 m/cocoon), lower sericin content (21.75 %) and significantly higher fibroin content (78.25 %).
