Abstract: Karnataka ranks second in the production of loose/traditional flowers comprising of flower types like roses, crossandra, chrysanthemum, marigold, jasmine, tuberose bachelor’s button and aster which are harvested with short stalk. Women play an important role in retailing of traditional flowers in the form of garlands or flower strings. The specific objectives of the study were to analyze factors influencing women to take up retail marketing of flowers and livelihood dependence of women on flower retailing. A total of 100 women flower retailers were selected from Chikkaballapura and Bengaluru city. Majority of respondents (51.11 %) spent 10-13 hours in Chikkaballapura, while in Bengaluru city (45.45 %), 8-10 hours were spent daily. A total of 17 variables were bunched on four factors, namely Suitability, Income, Family need and Livelihood with a total Eigen value of 11.56. The sources of household income from flower retailing comprised 76 per cent in Chikkaballapura and 61 per cent in Bengaluru. Fluctuations in flower Prices was the major constraint faced by retailers in both markets, lack of regular customers was the second most important constraint in Chikkaballapura, while, too much time in flower dispensing was the second most important constraint in Bengaluru city. The study has indicated that price fluctuation is the major constraint faced by retailers which supports the need for price analysis and forecasting of prices on a regular basis for streamlining flower supply.
